Co-sponsors of the 2023 Winning Out Certificates

It's a long long road to Olympia...

One of the most important agility 'showcase' events takes place every December at Olympia's London International Horse Show. Each year the country's most talented agility dogs and handlers vie with each other in qualifying heats at agility shows across the country to gain a coveted invitation to compete at the Kennel Club Olympia Stakes Finals.

Show Report in Brief
From our intrepid reporter Mandy Wallington

Olympia is a place of magic, where dreams are made and records aren't just broken. They are smashed into a million tiny glittering pieces. It's a show that listens to the people, and gives them what they cheer for. Now regular Olympia competitions include extreme carriage driving and, taking hold by storm, dressage to music, with spellbinding Olympian Charlotte Dujardin smashing the opposition and entering the record books with a near-perfect performance on Wednesday night. Who knows how long it might be before heelwork to music makes its debut at Olympia!

Agility, a doggie deviation from the traditional show jumping format, first started over 35 years ago with a few dogs woofing their way round the arena and now it is one of the highlights of the agility calendar.

Day 1-  Medium Dog Stakes
Launching the canine branch of Olympia this year were the medium dogs. Tasha Wise has reigned supreme for four years now with the awesome Dizzy. Could this be the year for a change at the top?

Medium Jumping Grand Prix

  1. Natasha Wise with Raeannes Flipping Heck

  2. Tracy Flower with Madame Ballerina

  3. Jacqui Tarn with Midknight of Merle Fracker

  4. Samantha Lane with Woodhouse Quartz of Diamonic

  5. Christine Wingate-Wyne withObay Tiz Wild

  6. Steve Richardson with No Worries Sweeps Dream

  7. Gilli Sayer with Morgans R Chance Dind

  8. Linda Cummings with Uran Moonlight Noworries

  9. Cheryl Harkness with Swift Lass

  10. Rob Marley with Leonis Minoris Pracipula

Tico, a little collie saved from being put to sleep at the 11th hour by Morgan's Rescue and rehomed to Gilli Sayer, put in an impressively fast run and looked to have done enough to win. However, team Dizzy put in another world class performance, to win the Olympia Medium Agility Stakes for a record 5th time. It looks like we can look forward to another year of record-breaking performances!

On Agilitynet FB Natasha Wise said, 'When will I wake up from this dream about Olympia ..... Words cannot describe how proud I am of my two girls over the past few days - Dizzy becoming the first dog to win Olympia 5 times and Jive achieving one of our lifelong agility goals has left me feeling very proud of them. Getting 2x1st a 3rd and 5th over our four rounds isn't too bad!! '

Day 2 - Small Dog Stakes.
They may be Small, but they have big personalities and are definite crowd pleasers.

The standard was set high with four early clear rounds; Rosie Cavill and cocker spaniel Spice, took the lead. The final runner was last year’s winner, young cocker spaniel Teasel, who had returned to defend her title with Claire Burrell. Unfortunately, she went off-course and picked up an elimination, leaving Rosie to claim the title.

Small Dog Agility Stakes Final

Day 3 - Large Agility Stakes
Saturday at Olympia is one of the biggest days of the year for dog agility. Thousands of the country's top competitors entered the preliminary rounds hoping for a chance to run at Olympia, with only the top few percent making it through.

Last year's winner, Alan Bray, made sure he didn’t fish any decorations out of the loft this year, ensuring his ribs remained intact and unbroken! It was a good job too, because judge Marc Saunders’ subtly tough semi-final course ended the dreams of many big names. Only 11 ran clear, with the first ten going through to the final in the evening.

Eve Leach and Roxie.11th fastest clear, had some recompense by winning the Pairs in the afternoon with Karen Marriot and Puzzle.

In the final, Dave Munnings' collie Boss and Sandra Adams collie Pip, handled by Lee Windeatt, both ran faster than the eventual winner, but unfortunately collected five faults on their way. Hannah Houldsworth had a fantastic clear run to go 2nd with Ann Hinz's working sheepdog Belle. But the star of the show was once again Alan Bray. This time he took 1st and 3rd places with his two dogs, with last year’s winner collie Indie beating her mum to re-claim her title.

1. Alan Bray with Upanova Dior Mine - 33.97 Sec (Clear)
 2. Hannah Houldsworth with Bell's Destiny - 34.51 Sec (Clear)
 3. Alan Bray with Rosmarinus Rumrosa at Upanova - 34.68 Sec (Clear)
 4. Dave Munnings with Devongem Mister Boss - 32.46 Sec (5)
 5. Lee Windeatt with Ag.Ch. Darleyfalls Pipistrelle - 32.98 Sec (5)
 6. Natasha Wise with Flickcee Latin Dancer - 34.22 Sec (5)
 7. Dennis Hilton with Wensleydale Lad - 35.04 Sec (5)
 8. Chris Cole with Mr Fahrenheit - 36.31 Sec (5)
 9. Sam Clarke with Indysols Miss Moneypenny 33.78 Sec (10)
 10. Bonny Quick with Lightning Trail of Flames (E)

Day 4 - Novice Agility Stakes
H & M Sunday is the biggest day for the riders at Olympia, with the top equestrian teams competing in a World Cup qualifying class.

For the canine teams, it is the turn of the rising stars, the Novice dogs. For many teams, this is their first Olympia experience. Nothing will have prepared them for 10,000 cheering spectators, Super Trouper spotlights and the cavernous arena. For many young dogs, even the slightest change in surroundings can promote the response 'Agility? What agility! Are you really sure you’ve been training me to do this for the last few years?'

Several dogs went off course, and Pauline Pearce had a lucky escape to make the final ten when her dog Kiwi sideswiped the last fence and it miraculously stayed upright!

Fastest runners-up Millie Clark with Dexter and Seb Thomas with Pixie won the lunchtime Pairs relay.

In the evening, Charlotte Harding's young Malinois was the only non-collie to make the final ten, and actually had the fastest time but unfortunately it knocked a pole. Bruce Lyons' collie Wiz had the crowd roaring with laughter with her bottom-shuffling antics on the Start Line, but this did not slow her for a minute as she raced home to take 1st place.

  10. Christine Brown with Lynwood Gem Mischief's Magic

Day 5 - ABC Agility Stakes
Olympia continues to dazzle -  and not just because of the show jumping. We have seen dancers dropping from the ceiling, Cossacks climbing around galloping horses and police officers taking off not only their own clothes whilst jumping, but most of what their horses are wearing, too!

Monday was the turn of any dog that is not a collie. For the first time, this year a maximum of two dogs per breed were allowed into the final ten. This allowed some new breeds to showcase agility at Olympia including flat-coated retrievers, Australian Shepherd dogs and Pointers. Most of the handlers and dogs have never been to Olympia before, but clearly enjoyed the experience. The ABC title went to Becky Salisbury, whose bearded collie Gadget stole the audience’s heart with his display of control and athleticism.

  1. Becky Salisbury with Get Some Gadget

  2. Helen Brown with Wild Blue Spirit Aki

  3. Jan Grayson with Blakanis Harriets a Flyer

  4. Mark Douglas with Starsofmars Puck

  8. Fiona Gavin with Cories Commander Spock(E)

  9. Samantha Lawrence with Just Marley(E)

  10. Sue Mosedale with Skinny When Wet (E)

And so another year at Olympia comes to an end. And for this roving reporter, heralds the start of a new era. A new job (and relocation), two young dogs to bring on and impending Grandmotherhood means that 2015 promises to be full of exciting surprises. A very Merry Christmas to one and all.

Olympia Semi-Final Qualifiers

One of the two most important 'showcase' events for agility in the UK takes place every December at Olympia's London International Horse Show. Every year the country's most talented agility dogs and handlers vie with each other in qualifying heats at agility shows across the country to gain a coveted invitation to compete at the Olympia finals.

In 2014, Skinners added its support to the Kennel Club Olympia Agility Stakes, and this much appreciated sponsorship continues through to 2016. This exciting collaboration between the Kennel Club and Skinners will ensure this event continues to remain a top class competition.

All but one of the Kennel Club Olympia Semi and Quarter Finals will take place at the KC International Agility Festival on 8th and 9th August. The Novice G3-5 Quarter Finals will take place at the City of Birmingham Champ Show. If you have qualified but are not competing for whatever reason, please let Dave Ray know so he can in a reserve.

Here is an update on the latest Olympia Semi-Final qualifiers.

Important Changes to Rules & Regs for 2014

The dates for the KC 2014 Olympia Agility Stakes Finals in December 2014 is to be confirmed.

From 2014 the Olympia Semi-Finals for all five competitions will take place at The Kennel Club International Agility Festival which is held annually in the Midlands in August. Novice G3-5 and Large G6-7 will in future be termed as Quarter-Finals to reflect the fact that there is a Semi-Final at Olympia for these competitions.

There is a change of grading for ABCs, Smalls and Mediums. This will not affect any handlers who have qualified or have entered shows on schedules released by clubs under the previous regulations at the time of the publication of these rules.

The specified height of Flyball hurdles has been lowered to encourage the smaller breeds. This will not affect the 2013 Final at Crufts 2014 which will be on the 2013 height.

All events must be judged under the appropriate Kennel Club regulations H & H(1) in force at the time of the event. Competitors entering any competition will be deemed to have agreed to abide by these regulations.

All heats must take place at Kennel Club licensed shows and the class name in the schedule should replicate exactly the name of the competition as stated in these regulations.

All Kennel Club supported competitions should be judged using standard marking.

If the entry for the heat exceeds the Kennel Club limit for a judge in a day, then the class will be equally split. Qualifiers and reserves from that heat will be taken in equal proportion from each part, giving the total number originally required from that heat (except where individual competition rules state differently). Rosettes and awards remain unchanged if the heat is split.

Dogs entered in any heats must be eligible for the competition entered and judges retain the right to check the height of any dog or ask to see the height stated in the Kennel Club Record Book.

The handler that qualifies a dog for the Quarter-Final/Semi-Final/Final will be the handler that competes. Handler substitutions not allowed.

All winners of the Olympia Grand Finals will be invited to compete in the following year's Quarter-Finals/Semi-Finals without qualifying through the usual procedure via heats. for the Novice winner this will be dependant on the dog still being eligible for Grades 3 – 5 on the date of entries closing for the Kennel Club International Agility Festival.

(These rules would be amended if any changes are made to Kennel Club agility regulations during the course of the competition year).

The K C Olympia Large Agility Stakes
