Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month these dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Boycie has found a new home.  (28/08/10)

BOYCIE

History: Boycie comes from a family home with two young children and three cats. He is a very energetic dog and a loving companion. Regrettably we can no longer offer him the time he needs and would be best in a home where he is not left for long periods. He regularly boards at Pet Lodge in Whitstable with Linda and Adrian Croxford who are well known on the agility circuit and are able to vouch for his temperament.
DescriptionBoycie is a Border Collie X Doberman, a handsome boy, mainly black and tan, with a white bib and front paws. He has had basic training, has good recall and is mad keen to please! He is good with other dogs, cats and children.
Rehoming criteria: He would enjoy an active home where he can be given lots of physical and mental stimulation.

Happy Ending: We are very excited for Cheeky (renamed) Lexie as she has been snapped up by a top class obedience handler. (10/08/10)

CHEEKY (NOW LEXIE)

History: Cheeky was purchased as a young dog from a local farmer and her owners realised that they had taken on a very lively collie which was just to much for them to cope with. They have loved and cared for her and given her the best.
Description
: As you can see from her photo, she is a lovely tri colour collie. She has a wonderful nature and is a very busy and on the go type. Cheeky is light in build, so agility/obedience/flyball for this girlie would be superb. She is good off lead, loves her toys and plays lovely with the other dogs.
Rehoming criteria: Working home is required where she can enjoy life and work her little socks off.

Happy Ending: Derry has gone to live in the  Cotswolds. Lucky thing! (04/08/10)

DERRY

History: Derry was given up by his previous owners. They were good and well-meaning people, who tried their best and worked with a professional behaviourist who uses only positive methods, but they had already become wary of Derry and made the decision that he would be better off in a more experienced home that could provide him with consistent, confident handling and lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Sadly, in this case, the breeder had failed to make the buyer aware of the nature of the breed they were buying and to have made suitable provision to take him back, or offer any positive assistance. Derry had learned as a youngster that snarling and on one occasion biting, got the results he wanted. He has never shown any aggression towards the behaviourist who has offered him a temporary home and is still working with him. He has also proved to be fine with other people and is very sociable with other dogs.
Description: Derry is approximately 19 inches at the shoulder and, being an Irish Terrier is of a leggy and racy build. He has a harsh, red coat that will need to be hand striped to retain its texture (worth it, because a well-maintained coat really does repel mud and water!) He really is a strikingly handsome dog, but we don’t want his looks to be his downfall again! We are looking for someone who falls in love with his brain and his energy above all.
Rehoming criteria: An experienced home where Derry can continue his education. Irish Terriers thrive on human companionship and really do love to learn. However, consistent handling is a must! More importantly, lots of fun is a must! Harsh handling, or mixed messages just don’t work. A good way of describing a young Irish Terrier is a big, fast, agile terrier with a Phd. Irish are built to jump and run (they were bred to hunt above ground) and absolutely love games where they can burn off energy in return for a reward. Wherever Derry goes, he would definitely benefit from a job to do.
Child friendly: Yes, but because of his history, he would be better placed in a home with older and very sensible children, or none at all.

Happy Ending: Fern has gone to an active family who are looking into Agility in their area.  (25/08/10)

FERN

History: Fern came from a family that found her energy levels more than what they were looking for in a family pet.
Description: Fern is a red merle Collie possibly crossed with a Whippet. She is extremely bouncy, energetic, and clever. Due to her possibly being part Whippet she is very fast and this would make her a good Agility or Flyball candidate. She is keen to learn and has picked up how to fetch her ball already.
Rehoming criteria: A home that will give her lots of physical and mental stimulation using positive reward based training. She is like a sponge and soaks up learning.

Happy Ending: Gia has been rehomed. (04/08/10)

GIA

History: Gia came to us as a stray from Ireland so we don't have much history.
Description:
She is a small tri-colour collie, very eager to learn and needs to be occupied. She is a bit of a foody and can be quite clingy. She has the herding instinct and gets on well with most other dogs. She is currently being fostered in a home with three other dogs - Collie x, Basset Hound and Yorkie. She would be great at agility as she has no problems jumping up to the worktop to steal food!
Rehoming criteria: All members of the household including other dogs must come and meet Gia.

Happy Ending: Harvey has been rehomed. (04/08/10)

HARVEY (REVISED AGAIN)

History: Harvey was adopted from the RSPCA a year ago by a young couple. However they have now have a baby and he is no longer wanted. He has been signed over to Kelpie Welfare.
Description: Harvey has been to training sessions run by a ex-Police dog handler twice weekly. He is enthusiastic and focused. Being part Lab, he loves treats. He plays with toys/balls and loves a game of tuggy. His heelwork on and off lead are excellent, he sits, downs and stays. His recall and retrieve are very fast. He can do a garden dog walk, long jump and single jump, but has been taught working trials style. He is very friendly and greets people nicely and does not jump up .He greets dogs politely, but loves a good wrestle with a willing participant.
Rehoming criteria: As he is fairly high drive, Harvey needs a job. Any doggy sport will suit. He will need continuing firm consistent training.

Happy Ending: Inca has found a new pet home. (03/08/10)

INCA

History: Inca was returned to me through no fault of his own,. The teenage boy who was supposed to be training him got fed up. Dad changed his job and was working away long hours and Mum became pregnant again, so all in all, they didn't have enough time or commitment for the dog
Description: Inca is a black and white, medium rough coated, classic marked dog with prick ears. He has a lovely temperament and gets on well with people and other dogs especially if they will play collie games with him!.
Rehoming criteria: He needs an active home where he will be worked and occupied for a large part of his life. Inca would suit an Agility home as very keen to learn just needs someone with the time to give him. Inca is KC reg/Pedigree which will be given to the new owner/s when approved. Happy Ending: Jasper is staying with me (his fosterer) as no suitable home could be found and he already started his Agility and made good progress with his guarding issues already. Ulla  (03/08/10)

JASPER

History: Jasper was given up by his owners due to a house move and they felt that they couldn't take him. Jasper was rehomed after that, but was returned due to guarding issues.
Description: Jasper is a beautiful, tall, tri red merle, long coated Border Collie. He is very well behaved and good with people, other dogs of all sizes as well as horses. At the moment, he lives in a foster home with plenty of other dogs without any problems. Jasper has a silky long coat which needs regular grooming. Jasper is very ball mad and is very focused on it. Jasper very much takes cue from existing dogs he lives with, if they are well behaved he will pick up on it, but he might copy bad habits (i.e. like barking ). He likes to play chase with other dogs, but is also very gentle. Jasper was introduced to Agility equipment and he had no problem doing any of the equipment he was asked to do. He has some guarding issues with solid food (bones) and in an enclosed space (the crate) but when this happens he is easily distracted with a ball and will forget whatever he was guarding. He has been in his foster home now for quite a while and has not caused any problems.
Rehoming criteria: Jasper needs a collie savvy owner who will make it clear that they won't take any nonsense from him and then he is an easy dog to live with. Apart from the food guarding issues, Jasper has no other hang ups, and is a very polite and gentle dog. We think that his guarding problem can be overcome as he is so keen on the ball which distracts him. He can live with both male and female dogs, and can be left. He is in general rather submissive and wouldn't start a fight. Due to his ball obsession, we think that Jasper would like to do Agility and be very trainable. He is very eager to please and would like a job.
Child friendly: Yes, older due to the guarding.

Happy Ending: Kai has been rehomed to an agility family - Hurrah! (10/08/10)

KAI

History:  Kai has been a very much loved dog but due to work and another new baby arriving, the family feels that Kai just needs more than they can give him. Kai comes from an ISDS Champ working lines.
Description: Kai is a super collie. He has a superb nature and loves everything. He is sound with other dogs, children and has no hangups whatsoever. The family have had lots of fun with him and he does lots of tricks, Hi Five and if you say 'bang' he plays dead. He weaves in and out of your legs, speaks on command and is generally a really lovely obedient dog.
Rehoming criteria: A working fun family home as Kai is a very active collie. He will love agility, flyball, obedience and I must add it has been a pleasure to have Kai here with us.

KEIRA

History: Keira's mum was brought into Bridgend Dogs Trust in whelp and gave birth to six pups. They think that Keira's the dad was a collie! We are fostering Keira for them and we have all her paperwork for adoption.
Description: Keira is a very happy lively puppy. She is crate trained, very nearly house trained, uses a dog flap, travels well, has a good appetite, great with other dog and people. I stress that she will need an active home and requires a lot of attention, like all puppies do. She will also have four weeks free insurance.

Happy Ending: Poppy has got a new home. (04/08/10)

POPPY

History: Poppy was bought as a Christmas present for two young boys with learning difficulties. She then made the mistake of growing into a boisterous young Lurcher and consequently spent most of her life shut in a crate or locked in the kitchen. If she was lucky, she was allowed to run around a very small back garden on occasions and was taken round the block on a lead once a day.
Description: She is black, broken coated, with white toes on her hind feet. Very pretty and athletic, will stand approximately 22in when fully grown. She really loves people in general. She is able to jump/scramble over 6ft fences if she wants to get to something on the other side (i.e. children playing on a trampoline.) However, this has not been a problem at her foster home as there are more interesting things going on for her inside the perimeter than outside it! Poppy is very intelligent and extremely quick to learn, coupled with a loyalty rarely found in such a young dog. Her attention and energy needs to be focused either in a working or competitive home where she will surely excel due to her extreme athleticism and enthusiasm.
Rehoming criteriaHer new owner must be prepared to spend lots of time training and exercising Poppy and give her a 'job' to do. Although Poppy can be left for short periods of time and is happy to stay in a crate of appropriate proportions, we would prefer her to be with someone at home during the day. A large garden, well fenced and not on a main road. Poppy hasn't been socialised with other dogs, but has she has integrated well with a pack of 12 other dogs in her foster home and has come on in leaps and bounds. She is calming down on a daily basis. Only homes with sensible dog already in residence will be considered in order to give Poppy a role model. Scruples Whippet Rescue adoption conditions apply.

Happy Ending: Sophie has been rehomed. There were loads of enquiries about her. (27/08/10)

SOPHIE

History: Sophie was purchased as a puppy but had outgrown her usefulness as a cute puppy and no longer wanted by her family.
Description: Sophie looks like a Beardie x Terrier, however she does not display any Terrier traits and is the size of a small Beardie. She has a gentle sweet loving nature with loads of get up and go. She is very cheeky> She is busy but not manic and picks things up very quickly, and will do anything for her ball which she will give back very gently. Sophie seems to get on with everyone and everything she meets, although she can be a tiny bit spooky on lead. This is probably due to never having any early socialisation. This is improving all the time. She is very good in the car and happy in a crate overnight. She is not destructive and is house trained.
Rehoming criteria: Sophie would benefit from a working pet home as she is currently enjoying learning and interacting with her fosterer. An active family would be perfect. Sophie can be left for short periods of time but would need someone around for some of the day. Sophie is good with children but would prefer her to be homed with older children, as she can jump up.

Happy Ending: Stanley has been rehomed to an agility centred home and he is happily settled. (10/08/10)

STANLEY

History:  Stanley’s first owners were inexperienced, failed to offer him stimulation and socialisation and, when he became too boisterous and grew too big, they couldn’t cope. Since December 2009 when I took him on, he has completed his beginners and Bronze training awards and it was my intention to progress to agility with him. However, divorce forces very reluctant rehoming. The trainer singled him out as well suited for working dog trials or agility.
Description:  Stanley is black with a white chest, standing at 24in tall. He is highly motivated and keen to work. He learns quickly, is playful and full of energy. He can be wilful and is a little immature but when focused shows determination. He is brilliant with other dogs, has been on caravan holidays and travels well on long journeys.
