Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 26 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

 APRIL 2009

Breed: GSD X

Happy Ending: Ella has been rehomed by her fosterer who says 'she is a wonderful dog and has put some weight on and learned some manners!' (24/04/09)

BLONDE ELLA

History: I have been ask to help privately rehome Ella. She was originally rescued from a non-return pound about a year ago. The new owner had her for about six months but couldn't manage her, so the brother took her to save her going back into kennels. He has been at home with her, but, as he needs to go back to work full time, he does not think it is fair for her to left alone all day. She had some separation anxiety to be begin with, but is a lot calmer now, though she prefers someone to be around.
Description Ella is a white, light-boned and light-weight, very bouncy, lively, intelligent, amenable bitch, mainly GSD possibly with some collie and possibly some Labrador. She is slightly skittish, very quick and very focused. She loves to run and play with my five dogs and she shows herself as naturally the 'top bitch.' She is full of energy, very inquisitive, very bouncy but stays around the owner waiting for instructions rather going off on her own. Ella is gentle, well-socialised and fun-loving with good bite inhibition. Ella can easily keep up with my Lurchers as she loves to run and she likes to jump through long grass like a gazelle. She also works for food.
Rehoming criteria: Ella would enjoy a lively home where she can learn new things.
Child friendly:
Yes, but too bouncy for small children.
Able to live with cats: At the moment, no, because of a lack of knowledge about her on my part and she does not live with them. She has been inquisitive with my cats and wants to chase, but is soon distracted..
Age:
2-3 years approx
Sex: Bitch
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes

Happy Ending: Buster has been rehomed.  (10/04/09)

BUSTER

History: Buster was originally a stray who was rehomed, unfortunately in his new home he became very wound up by other dogs outside and ragged the boys sleeve, so was returned.
Description: Buster is a tan and white, long legged JRT. He is a very loving dog who loves lots of fuss and will lie on the settee for a cuddle. He also loves to play and his food.
Rehoming criteria: Buster will require An experienced 'terrier' home with people over 16 years. His new owners should be prepared to put some training in as he has not been socialised with other dogs and gets very wound up by them at the moment, so this will require some work.
Child friendly: Not under 16 years old
Able to live with cats: Not tested, but probably not.

Age: 10 months
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: No

Breed: Border Collie

Contact: Society for Abandoned Animals, Mosley Acre Farm, Barfoot Bridge, Stretford M32 9UP. Tel. 0161 973 5318

Happy Ending: Thanks for putting Charlie on the rescue page. We have had an enquiry about him but he had already been reserved by then and went off to his new home today. It's not going to be an agility home as such but the new owners oldest daughter is going to do a bit of fun stuff with him so you never know. She may get hooked! Julie Threlfall  (08/04/09)

CHARLIE

History: Charlie came into the Society for Abandoned Animals after his owner went back to full time employment. She got him from another rescue centre but hadn't been told how much attention a young pup needs. Charlie was then passed onto a family member who had young children and once again, couldn't give young Charlie enough time. At just six months old, we are his 5th port of call.
Description:  Mainly white with a black tail and bum, Charlie has a spotty tummy, too. Very very cute dog! He is a very sociable chap and is keen to make friends with everyone, people & dogs alike. He is a very alert boy and should respond well to training. Someone has taught him to 'sit' and we are working on the 'down' and 'wait.' He catches on quickly.
Rehoming criteria: An active home where Charlie can use his brain. Prospective new owner must have a private, secure garden and be at home for at least part of the day.

Child friendly: Yes, He has lived quite happily with young children aged 1 and 4 years.

DORA

History: Dora came into us from an unsuitable pet home.
Description: Dora is a tri colour short haired collie. She will probably be Medium sized for agility. She can appear quite under socialised and nervous at first but she soon comes out of herself and there is a strong character underneath! Dora loves her toys and is a tennis ball addict. Dora has already begun to pick up the basics very quickly and we feel will make a cracking agility dog.
Rehoming criteria:  An active home where Dora will be given lots of fun things to do and where she can continue to be socialised to ensure she reaches her full potential.
Child friendly:
Yes, as long as home is experienced.

Happy Ending: Doris has been rehomed to a wonderful couple who can give her all the attention, fuss and exercise that such a gorgeous dog needed.   (28/04/09)

DORIS

History: Doris is still with her owners whose house unfortunately is too small for two energetic dogs so it is with regret and sadness that they are looking to rehome her.
Description: Doris is a lively Springer Spaniel X. She absolutely loves children and really is a great dog. She is fully house trained and has an absolutely gorgeous temperament but she is a typical Springer and always on the go. Doris will be an extremely loyal dog for the right adventurous and energetic family.
Rehoming criteria: She will need to go to a home that can tire her out. She would make a great gun/agility dog as she is very intelligent and agile.

Description: A small, black and tan terrier x , she is typically terrier in nature - full of fun and mischief , intelligent and very active. Loves to play with other dogs and will carry on going until she falls asleep from exhaustion.

Happy Ending: Fizz has just been rehomed with a family of five other dogs. They have lots of land and she seems to be settling in well. (05/04/09)

FIZZ

History: Fizz's owner cannot walk her due to arthritis in her legs, so I walk Fizz for her. She was adopted 9 weeks ago. Fizz is now looking for a forever home due to her being too boisterous, she knocked over her owner who then couldn't get up for 40 mins and lives on her own which is not an ideal situation.
Description: Fizz is great with people and other dogs and loves kids but is just too boisterous for her owner who has never had a dog before and is now unwell. She's medium size and is black brindle and white, and very athletic.
Rehoming criteria: She will only be rehomed to an experienced owner(s) and preferably to a agility or flyball home as she is too bright to be a couch potato.

Happy Ending: Flick has been rehomed.  (28/04/09)

FLICK

History: Flick was reluctantly handed into the local stray kennels as his family could no longer care for him. He had done his time and hadn't attracted the right people and so came into the care of Rain Rescue.
Description: He is full of energy - a dog with lots of life in him but not crazy. Flick is a beautiful looking dog with a fabulous coat and wonderful nature. He has a bobtail which seems strange, but it seems as though he was born with it. He loves to be with people, and is extremely clean in his kennel. He will jump up at you for attention, and tries to carry his lead. I think he is looking for something to do, and would probably be suitable for agility - don't know about fly-ball as not that ball crazy. - however, he has been out and playing with a border terrier male whilst we have had him, and totally ignored a dog who was barking like crazy at him. Has been introduced to men, women and children and seems a normal type of dog.
Rehoming criteria:
He needs an experienced owner that will allow the energy to be used up and for someone who wants to have a sociable companion. Would need someone who will commit to at least 1.5 hours worth of exercise each and every day - no small children due to the jumping up.
Child friendly: Yes – though maybe too bouncy to live with.
Previous owners recommended not rehoming with small children or small furries
Able to live with cats: Unknown - probably not.
Age: 5 years
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Will be prior to rehoming
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: £125

Description: Freddie is a handsome lad with his huge ears. He was very nervous when he arrived at the Centre and they are building on his confidence levels in lots of different ways. Freddie is not doing very well in this environment and needs a forever home as soon as possible.
Rehoming criteria: Freddie needs a loving, understanding home who will give him time to adjust and blossom. He will need an experienced owner who is willing to work with him to make him in to a good agility dog. IGGY (UPDATED)

History: Iggy came into us from an unsuitable pet home. He is currently on foster for Dogs Trust Bridgend.
Description: Iggy is currently on foster in a home living with 11 other collies. He loves to 'sheep'  one of the boys but when out in the park etc is then fixed on his ball/frisbee. He has a good recall, travels well, is house trained and crate trained. He is very well- adjusted and nothing seems to faze him. Great with adults and children.

Happy Ending: Lassie has been kept by her fosterers. So she is on a farm (though fosterers now retired) with  a male and a female collie to keep her company. She is making slow but very steady progress and is already much loved. (28/04/09)

LASSIE

History: Lassie was found as a stray at 5-6 months old. She was taken in by a lady (aged 71) who has kept her for the last year. The lady can longer cope with Lassie as her experience with dogs is minimal. Lassie has been well cared for over the past year.
Description: Lassie is a black and white border collie with a long wavy coat. She has not been trained or exercised enough and she can become spooked while outside. She mixes well with most dogs and is confident within the home. She has plenty of intelligence and once with the right family will enjoy channelling her energy. Lassie would be more suited to an agility home rather than flyball as she has shown little interest in tennis balls but much prefers footballs.

.

History: Lenny had been living rough for some time and was in a terrible condition. We think Lenny had become lost, but sadly no one came forward to claim him. He is now a healthy, happy lad and shows no problems from his ordeal.
Description: Lenny is a nice looking, long coated tri colour collie. He is light, agile with a great temperament. We think Lenny is an X factor dog. He is a very special lad, just waiting for someone to show him what to do. He is bright, focused and really wants to please; he will bond very quickly with someone who is prepared to do some training with him.

Leo would be ideal for agility, flyball, working trials etc and loves to please you whenever he gets the opportunity

Happy Ending: Ollie now has a great home with a lady who intends to do obedience and agility with him.  (16/04/09)

OLLIE

History: Ollie is a Border collie who previously lived as a pet with friends of the stud dog owner, but he has proved a little too much for the lady of the household to deal with. His previous owners attended basic dog training, and the instructor’s daughter also did some extra training with him. He responded well. Both his parents can be seen.
Description: Ollie is a tall, lean and sturdy tri-colour Border collie. He does not as yet have a heavy coat, but is still quite young. I wouldn’t expect him to become very heavy coated, but he is not a smooth. He is very friendly with people and dogs. He is a typical collie, full of energy and keen to learn. He quickly makes attachments with anyone who is willing to spend some time occupying his mind and stimulating him. He has a strong athletic build and has quickly learned some agility and obedience basics.
Re-homing criteria: Ollie needs to go to a working (e.g. obedience, agility, working trials, etc) home with people who are knowledgeable of the breed.

Happy Ending: Prince has been rehomed and will soon be enjoying off road mountain biking and rock climbing in the remotest parts of Wales.(29/04/09)

PRINCE I

History: Prince was rescued from Wales where he had been abandoned on the streets. Although he was out and about on his own, Prince was in good physical condition and showed no indication of having suffered any ill treatment prior to entry to the Rescue Centre.
Description: Prince is a Tri-colour WSD, with lovely markings. Prince is a large, strong, highly intelligent dog. In the short time he has been with us, Prince has proved himself to be an exceptionally willing pupil; he is developing basic obedience skills and is enjoying daily opportunities to play and socialise.
Rehoming criteria: Prince gets on well with bitches but would probably be better suited to a home where he was the only male dog or the sole dog in the home. Prince has a huge amount to offer an owner with good leadership skills but is not a 'beginner's dog.' In experienced hands, Prince could make a sensational agility or flyball dog.
Child friendly: Teenagers
Able to live with cats:  No, history of living with cats but could probably adjust without a problem

Happy Ending: Prince II has been rehomed.  (12/04/09)

PRINCE II

History: Prince was rescued from a home where he was being kept in a small puppy crate all day and night and only let out to go to the toilet. He has been in foster care for nearly 3 months.
Description: Prince is a handsome black Labrador. He would make a great agility dog as he desperately needs a job to do. He has learned many new commands since being in foster care and is a very fast learner. He will do anything for a treat! He loves a cuddle and loves to play, particularly bouncing around! He does having chewing issues when separated from his handler so someone who works long hours would not be suitable. He is being re-introduced to a crate in a positive way and it is going very well.
Rehoming criteria: Prince will need a garden as he needs an area to burn off some of his puppy energy. Prince hasn't learned doggy etiquette yet as he wasn't socialized until he came into foster care, but he is improving.

Happy Ending: Smithy has been rehomed.  (24/04/09)

SMITHY

History: Smithy found as a stray in the Exeter area, so no history on him.
Description: He is a very handsome black and tan Kelpie x with a white flash. Smithy is a well made, rangy dog with an athletic build – quite leggy at present although he looks immature still. He is very cheerful, with an exuberant personality, he just loves everybody! Despite never having met me or my dogs before, within minutes Smithy was playing with all of us. He appears to know nothing but very quickly started to come to call, sit and offer a paw for treats. Typical smart kelpie! He showed a desire to chase the other dogs to play, but no signs of a desire to ‘herd.’
Rehoming criteria: He will need a home used to a high energy working dog as he is very confident and I suspect will rule the roost if allowed to. He needs to 'do' something to burn off that energy. He is also strong so needs to learn some manners on the lead.
Child friendly:
Untested, but probably as he loves everything! but too bouncy for small children.
Able to live with cats: Untested.
Age: Exact age unknown, approx 12 months.
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: Donation to Animal Rescue Centre (ARC)
