Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 22 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Badger has gone to a new home. (20/04/10)

BADGER

History: Badger came in as his previous home didn’t have the time to spend with him.
Description: Badger is a tri colour, short coated collie. He’s very sweet and loves affection; he can be very bouncy when he gets excited. He loves to be out and about and doing something. Badger is a bit thin at the moment and we are trying to put some weight on him. He travels okay in the car. He has previously lived with young children without problems and seems fine with other dogs. Badger isn’t house trained as yet and he did jump over their fencing on occasion, but we don’t think he was getting enough exercise or stimulation and simply got bored. He is also not used to being left alone.
Rehoming criteria: Badger needs a new home where people have the time to spend with him that he needs. A new home would have to understand that he does need some basic training first as well as agility or flyball training. Badger is only young and we feel he would make an excellent dog in the right home with the right people.
Child friendly:
Yes, had previously lived with children with no problems, although he may knock a very young child over in his excitement.
Able to live with cats: Unknown. Was reported to have been beaten up by a neighbour's cat!!
Age: 7 months
Sex: Dog

Micro-chipped: Yes

Happy Ending: Bayz is currently still with us and we are no longer rushing to find him a home. If the perfect one comes up then yes we will rehome him but, if not. I am content to keep him with us.  Helen (18/04/10)

BAYZ

History: We rehomed Bayz at around six months of age. He settled in well but his deep drive to herd other dogs makes keeping him difficult. I feel he needs a home with a more experienced handler, and think an agility or obedience home would be better for him.
Description: Bayz is a light tan/white male Collie/Belgian Shepherd X. He is a lively, loving, bouncy, highly excitable dog. He is obedient indoors and garden, gets on well with other dogs. He doesn't walk well on lead, and off lead in park he is over friendly and herds other dogs. He will walk your way if given the instruction but he hates being put back on lead so tends to stay at arms length. He is fully housetrained, travels well and has experienced camping. I had hoped to be able to keep him but a flyball family just isn't the right place. He currently lives with cats and another collie. If anyone wants to see video's please look me up on Facebook under the name Helen Lee.
Rehoming criteria: Bayz needs an active agility or obedience home where his instinct to herd can be worked on. Any potential home will be checked and a meeting of Bayz and any potential pack mates must take place prior to rehoming.
Child friendly: Yes, but teens or older as he is over excitable and jumps up.
Able to live with cats: Yes, but dog aware cats only as he will chase to play.
Age: 17 months.
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: Rescue centre donation.

Happy Ending: Ben has found a new home with lovely people in Highworth, Wiltshire who have always had collies. They enjoy obedience training and, once old enough, they will look at doing agility and/or flyball with him. (18/04/10)

BEN

History: Ben was removed from an unsatisfactory home where he was crated for many hours a day and would even mess in his own bed due to being left for too long. He also could not walk on the lead and was bullied by the children in the house.
Description: Ben is a friendly black and white collie who likes to please and learn. Since leaving the house and being in foster he has become a friendly, happy boy with all he meets and is doing well with house training but more importantly learning to be a dog again.
Rehoming criteria:  Application, homecheck and adoption agreement and donation applies.

Happy Ending: Bonney has now found a home. (18/04/10)

BONNEY

History: Beautiful Bonney has sadly had to be returned to us this morning as she didn't get on with another bitch in the house. Her family had her for four months and really tried to make it work but unfortunately Bonney and the other girl just didn't like each other and will be much happier living apart.
Description: Bonney is a stunning little girl! She is housetrained, lead trained, used to people and children and has been a fantastic pet for a family who have been very sad to have to part with her.
Rehoming criteria: Bonney isn't bad with other dogs and is kennelled with another dog and a bitch with us at the moment without any fuss or grumbles but we will have to be careful with what dogs we might send her to live with in her new home. She would be happy to live as an only dog if her family were around and didn't have to leave her alone for long periods. She will need a home where her new family have some experience with collies, she's not that complicated of a dog but would really benefit from living somewhere she is understood.

Happy Ending: Cinders has found a fab new home! She has gone to an agility home in the south of Cornwall. She shares her new home with two older 'sisters' plus her new mum and dad. As Cinders is so distinctive in her looks, hopefully she will been noticed on the circuit (in a good way!) I'm sure this is the start of her fantastic new life. (18/04/10)

CINDERS

History: Cinders was taken from death row in the pound, so her history prior to coming into Four Paws is unknown. She is currently in a foster home.
Description: Cinders is a very pretty, bright, responsive young lady. She is athletic and looks to her handler for direction. She is great off lead and has good recall. While she wants to approach other dogs to play, she does so in a very polite manner and can be recalled away. She happily shares her foster home with other dogs. She has none of the bad collie traits such as chasing cyclists or joggers. She does not seem to have had much in the way of socialisation or training prior to going into foster and, as a consequence, was a bit shouty at things which scared her. She has, however, responded very well to some simple counter-conditioning and de-sensitisation. Her only remaining issue is on-lead with other dogs. Her foster carer, however, finds this easy to manage and a minor issue that a reasonably experienced handler would not find a problem.
Rehoming criteria: Would like an active home with a reasonably experienced family.
Child friendly:
Yes, but probably best with older children due to her occasional excitability.
Able to live with cats: Yes
Age: Approx 10-11 months
Sex: Bitch

Happy Ending: Daisy has found anew home. (20/04/10)

DAISY

History: Daisy is being rehomed due to her owners illness.
Description: Daisy is a small Collie x female. She is sweet tempered, housetrained and crate trained. She travels very well in the car and is good off lead. She is good on lead but could do with further social skills with this. She is good with other dogs but has not lived with cats. She could live with older children. She loves to play and enjoys her walks. She would love a hobby such as agility.
Rehoming criteria: Would enjoy an active home.
Child friendly:
Yes, better with older children.
Able to live with cats: No experience
Age: 2 years
Sex: Bitch
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Unknown

Happy Ending: Emo has been homed recently to a lovely lady from the Northampton area who has two other dogs. She was looking for a younger dog to train for agility as her current pair are older. Emo is starting by going with her to agility to get used to the atmosphere. (18/04/10)

EMO

HistoryEmo has been brought back to us for the third time in his short life. The first reason for return was 'the owners were unable to care for him. At the time he was five months old. The second time he was returned was that he was 'not getting on with the other dog and cat in the home,' and this third visit was for 'being too much' for the owners.
Description: Emo is a black & white, short coated, Border Collie. He is bright and intelligent, likes to run around after his ball and makes his own amusement if not kept occupied. Emo catches on to things quickly, then can apply them for his own needs. Emo can be worried and defensive at times if confronted, or has his collar grabbed, so needs work in this area. He responds very well to positive reward based training - and his ball.
Rehoming criteria:  An active home that will keep his mind as well as his body occupied. He will get bored quickly if left home alone for too long.
Child friendly: Yes over 12yr olds please

History: Flinn is being rehomed due to owner not having enough time for him.
Description: Flinn is good with horses, other dogs and has been living with a baby and is good with her. He is housetrained, good on an extendable lead and good off-lead when he goes to the horses.
Rehoming criteria:
Flinn would love an active home as he loves his long walks and would even love agility.

Happy Ending: George has found a home - and it is an agility one, too! (27/04/10)

GEORGE

History: George has come into us from an unsuitable pet home.
Description: George is a black and white WSD. He is going to be medium or long coated. He is toy and food motivated and is good with other dogs.
Rehoming criteria: George is very 'worky' and would not be happy as a typical family pet. He needs a home where his brain will be utilised or else he will go self-employed. An agility/obedience home would be ideal. George will be a little superstar in the right hands.
Child friendly:
Yes, as long as home is right
Able to live with cats: Yes

Happy Ending: Giggs was re-homed a time back. He has gone to a lady who lives on her own. She takes him to work with her each day. He is a companion dog that is with her much of the time. (20/04/10)

GIGGS

History: Giggs arrived at Three Counties Dog Rescue very recently.
Description: He is a very, very playful boy who just loves a game of football, and enjoys the company of people.
Rehoming criteria: Giggs needs an active family home where he will receive plenty of stimulation to channel his energy. We feel that he would respond well to agility training and perhaps would suit a young handler, with his happy playful nature.

JET

History: Jet was initially taken in as a stray, so not much is known about his past. Jet is being rehomed by his current owner as she is unable to provide the exercise and mental stimulation he needs.
Description: Jet is a black and white collie X. He is friendly and very playful. He loves to run and appears to have a high work drive so would be suited to agility or flyball. He is very active and needs
a handler who is firm but fair and is able to provide lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Although Jet is fairly obedient, but would benefit from a refresher course.
Rehoming criteria: Jet would enjoy an active home, preferably with older children due to his size.
Child friendly: Yes - very friendly but boisterous.

Happy Ending: A great obedience home has been found for Lady. She has been there a week already and is totally adored.  (06/04/10)

LADY

History: Lady was originally brought as a mother's day gift for a 70 year old lady who had never owned a dog before!
Description: Lady red and white WSD. She is currently being fostered in
Birmingham. Lady is lovely but she is also a strong, bossy young thing for a puppy.
Rehoming criteria:
Lady is farm bred and as such would need to go into a knowledgeable home where she can be educated in the nicer ways of life! An agility/obedience home would be favoured where her strength's can be utilised. She was said to have snapped at the original owner, but the current fosterer has not had anything like that happen with her. The fosterer says she is a lovely dog, just very strong due to her farm breeding. Please consider this lovely girl.
Child friendly:
Older collie savvy children should be okay as she is so young.
Able to live with cats: Not tested
Age: 10 weeks old
Sex: Bitch
Neutered: No
Vaccinated: Yes - first vaccinated.
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes

Happy Ending: Little Peg has found a new home now, working with a horse behaviourist travelling round the country with her and enjoying great times running around with horses.  So not an agility home but a happy ending! (06/04/10)

LITTLE PEG

History: Little Peg was rescued from PTS situation.
Description: Peg is a gorgeous little madam, just slightly bigger than a whippet - a Medium in agility terms. She is toy obsessed and has a fantastic recall. She is full of energy, cheeky, affectionate and would lavish a busy family lifestyle and a job to do. She walks well on the lead, can be a bit vocal until she is worn out. Can be toy possessive.
Rehoming criteria: Better suited to living with older male who is not toy interested!
Child friendly: Not really young children

MARLEY

History: Marley has been handed in to Lizzies Barn because he was just too busy for his family.

Happy Ending: Meg has found a home with a lady who travelled down yesterday with her young male collie. She worked with Meg all afternoon and decided to take her home. She currently works her young collie at agility and hopes to do the same with Meg. It seemed to be love at first sight so we hope they have a successful career together.  (16/04/10)

MEG

History: Meg has come into us from a family home who were moving and felt they didn't have time for her.
Description: Meg is a farm bred, very pretty black and white medium-coated collie. She is friendly with people and dogs. Meg has some obsessive behaviours, such as shadow chasing and spinning and these behaviours are obviously becoming worse in the kennel environment. However, when taken off site, Meg is super, loves toys and treats. She can be a little unruly so will benefit from the basics but has no malice.
Rehoming criteria: We are aware that perhaps Meg is older than what people typically want for agility but we are desperate to find her a collie-savvy owner who understands why she has these obsessive behaviours and can help her overcome this. She would fit in lovely with a existing group of dogs

MUESLI

History: Muesli was bought in with her brother from an unwanted litter of collies
Description: Museli is a medium-coated black and white collie. The photo really doesn't do her justice. She is a gorgeous little thing and looks like she is constantly smiling! Is toy and food motivated. Muesli is friendly with people and dogs. Has no hangs up - she is just a typical happy little collie pup!

Happy Ending: Nugget has just completed his trial run in his new home which went well.  It is not an agility or working home which we had hoped that we could find - hence the trial. However, Dad is a forester in the Highlands and takes Nugget to work with him so he is having an outdoors life with plenty of exercise with experienced collie people. (21/04/10)

NUGGET

History: Nugget lived with his family from a pup (couple, child, another dog and a cat) until his world fell apart when the relationship split and he came to the Dumfries and Galloway rescue centre.
Description
: Nugget is not the prettiest collie. He is short coated, black and white, with a white freckled face and erect ears. His beauty is in his eyes which are a dark hazel colour. They are wonderfully alert, expressive and intelligent.  Nugget's eyes tell you he needs to learn, to give devotion and to receive praise.  He is responsive, fast and has a good running action. He adores toys and is quick to understand new games - so why not the best game of all, agility?  Nugget has had basic training and even manages sufficient self-control to do a sit stay in exhilarating circumstances such as having his lead on before leaving his kennel. Not surprisingly, Nugget is getting frustrated and stressed in the kennels. Nugget is used to travelling in a car and is house trained.

Rehoming criteria:  The rescue centre is looking for a home which will provide Nugget with an outlet for his brains and drive as well as providing a life time of love and care.
Child friendly: Yes, but might be a bit too boisterous for very small children
Able to live with cats: Yes, he has lived with a cat but chases strange cats so will need careful introduction.

Happy Ending: We are pleased to report that Storm has been re homed today. (18/04/10)

STORM

History: Storm has had a chequered start to his life in that he has had  eight homes in his short life. Despite this he is very trusting of both people and dogs.
Description: Storm is very intelligent and learns very quickly. He is attending training with his fosterer and enjoys it. He loves to learn and have a job to do.
Rehoming criteria: Storm needs to be in an active home but one that will build up the exercise slowly. As with a large breed over exercise could have a detrimental effect on his joints. He can be rehomed to a family but one with older children as he can be boisterous at times.

Happy Ending: Tig hwent to a terrier home in Lincolnshire where she has settled in really well with the other dogs. They haven't got the hype of the collies that she had living with us. Her new owner is a Grade 3 handler so will continue with all the training we have done. (18/04/10)

TIG

History: Tig joined us in 2008 from a home where she had too much pent up energy and had got frustrated. She is keen to learn and knows lots of tricks. She loves to curl up with you on the sofa and can be very affectionate.
Description: Tig is currently running in Medium Grade 3, having won out of Grade 1 & 2 in her first season. She is an affectionate dog but living with our pack of collies winds her up and makes her over excitable and noisy. She has never learnt to cope with excitement and this sometimes this causes her to get herself into frenzy.
Rehoming criteria: An experienced terrier and agility home would be ideal for Tig.
