Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 10 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

 JANUARY 2011

Breed: Kelpie

Contact: Ring Donna Cain on tel: 01434 381089. Far Nentsberry Farm, Alston, Cumbria CA9 3LZ

Happy Ending: Ben has gone on trial for sheep work with a great farmer. (22/01/11)

BEN

History: Ben came in from a rescue centre where he was not coping very well. Since being here, he has been an angel. He has been in a foster home for a short while and was very well behaved.
Description: A tall leggy Kelpie, black and tan in colour, he is food motivated and is getting into toys. He needs a little more work, but is almost there. He was very poorly when first in kennels, but now has a clean bill of health and is full of beans! He needs some more work on his recall, but this is improving. He is fine with other dogs, but can be a little randy, but moves away if they growl. He is a pleasure to look after, very loving, very quick to learn and eager to please. He was originally bought in for guarding issues, but has not shown any signs of these so far.
Rehoming criteria: Ben is not a first time dog. He would be pushy if allowed, but he is very loving. He would need someone around for part of the day. He would be ideal for agilty as he is quick to learn and keen to do things and needs to use his brain. Ben does not show any chase issues. He will need to build a bond with his new owner but, like most kelpies, once it's there it's hard to beat!
Child friendly: No, he is not suitable to live with young children given his history.

BRUNO

History: Bruno's family didn't have time for him.
Description: He is brindle in colour, possibly GSD x Terrier but we don't really know. Medium sized. Very people orientated and good natured.
Rehoming criteria: Bruno is a high energy dog, but he is very bright and lovely to train and connects really well with his handler, so someone who will take an interest in training him, agility would be ideal.

Happy Ending: Chester has found a new home. (20/01/11)

CHESTER

History: Chester was previously rehomed by us over two years ago but has been returned as the new collie female in the home was continually challenging him as she matured - not helped by the owner, we believe who was reinforcing the female's behaviour. Despite advice from our kennel team, the situation did not improve and now Chester is looking for a special home.
Description: Chester is a handsome chap who will do anything to retrieve any toy upon request. He has been obedience trained and is a really, really wonderful working dog who would do well with someone who is interested in obedience, agility or similar hobbies. This boy really wants to work for you.
Rehoming criteria: Chester is able to live in a family environment, so long as his owners have the time to spend with him as this dog would dearly like to be worked.

Happy Ending: Foggarty now has a lovely new home, not for a agility but as a pet!!
(30/01/11)

FOGGARTY

History: Foggarty was originally a stray so not much previous history is known. Since being with us, he has been quite well behaved, although he can still be a naughty puppy which are the best kind!
Description: Foggarty is a chocolate, smooth-coated boy with ears that are not quite sure what they are doing at the moment. He is very loving, toy and food motivated. Foggarty has high chase instincts, but these are improving all the time, and his recall is getting better and better. He is very over the top when meeting new dogs, but he does listen when told. He is a beautiful boy, has been good in the house, is almost toilet trained and a very likeable pup. He learns fast and is eager to please.
Rehoming criteria: Due to his age, Foggarty will need someone around for part of the day. He  He will need a home to continue his training and his high energy levels.
Child friendly:
Yes but would probably not be suitable for younger children due to his mouthing.
Able to live with cats: No, although we are working on this

Happy Ending: Gem is on foster with a view to keep. Fingers crossed. (22/01/11)

GEM

History: Gem came in from a pet home as she was too much for the lady to cope with. She had also had three previous homes where again her energy levels were just too much.
Description: Gem is a short-coated tri bitch with classic markings> She is a great size - not too big, but powerful. S she is so switched on and learns so fast, a real 'what next' collie! She is very loving but does have strong herding instincts which will need to be worked on or used to the new owners advantage. She excels at whatever you teach her. She is good with other dogs although can be a little bossy sometimes, but soon moves if the other dog tells her off!
Rehoming criteria: Gem will need to go to an active home. This little lady has a brain to die for and just wants to learn all she can. With the brain and drive that she has, Gem would make an excellent agility dog

Happy Ending: Honey has now been re-homed to people who will train her and put right her issues with chasing everything that moves. (20/01/11)

HONEY

History: Honey currently lives in a house with three children, aged from 23 months to 5 years. She is good with the children but we have problems with her trying to chase cars whilst on our walks. As I am pushing a buggy this gets a bit much for me to deal with.
Description: Honey is a tri-coloured, short coated collie. She is house trained and is good when left, although can sometimes bark. She really is a lovely girl who deserves more than I can give her. She does sit, down and come back when called. Sometimes she gets very over excited and finds it hard to contain herself. She has bags of energy and does bounce around a lot but has a very sweet nature. She does like to dig in garden and chase the birds round, but with a more active home I think this would calm down.
Rehoming criteria: I think Honey would benefit from an experienced Collie home where owners would have more time to put in with her training, and exercise.

Happy Ending: Ice has gone to an agility home. (22/01/11)

ICE

History: Ice came in from a farm in appalling condition. She was to be shot for not working sheep. She was so timid that she would not even move when bathed!! She was very thin and had just given up on life. She came in with her sister who was much braver than her.
Description: Ice is a short-coated tri bitch, very, very loving when she learns to trust you. She is currently in a foster home where she has improved daily. She now plays tuggy and is starting to enjoy life. She is still nervous of people that she does not know, but it would not take long to build up a trust with her.
Rehoming criteria: Ice will need a kind, patient owner who will continue to bring this young lady out of herself. She has improved so much in such a short space of time, which I know with a kind owner she will excel at whatever she does. She will need someone to continue her training and show her love with boundaries. She has a heart of gold, and has never, ever shown any malice even when terrified.

Good Ending: Mickey has been re-assessed due to serious behaviour and is not suitable for agility or pet home. It is now thought he is a Czech imported shepherd after a visit from experts in this breed. He is now in their safe hands. (24/01/11)

MICKEY

History: Mickey  was due to be put to sleep as his owners decided that they could not keep him as they were having a baby and living in a small flat. No local rescue home could take him at the time.
Description: He is a very friendly chap but Mickey has not had much training, if any at all. To start with he  was quite a handful. After two months he is now however getting the idea that training and people are fun. He can now play with the other dogs but can be a bit rough with the softer breeds. He can be nervous in new situations but this is improving and as he has lived in a flat with limited walks this is quite understandable. It only took one walk round to get the idea of the agility equipment.
Rehoming criteria:
Mickey will make someone a very loyal dog who wants to be doing something, not a quiet pet.
Child friendly:  He does jump and bounce around so teenagers would be okay if experienced with dogs.
Able to live with cats: No
Age: 22 months
Sex: Dog

Happy Ending: Paddy has gone to a pet home. (22/01/11)

PADDY

History: Paddy came in from Ireland. He was with travellers and has been through a very tough time in his past. He has been starved and mistreated but is still a very loving dog!
Description: Paddy is quite a large JRT, crossed possibly with a collie. He still measures Small for agility. He is smooth coated and tan and white. Hhe has lost the tip of one ear but is still very handsome. He has a very good recall, and very fast when food is involved. He is very loving, and loves a cuddle. He is toy motivated as well as food. Due to being starved in the past, he looks for food quite a lot and will need work on this as he still snatches quite a bit when you have food in your hand.
Rehoming criteria: Paddy will need someone around for part of the day to help him settle. He is very active so will need something to do. He is good with all people. He gets on well with other dogs, and he is a very quick learner. He would be great for agility as he is quick and agile and at the larger end of the small height.
Child friendly: Yes, he is good with children, but due to his snatching food will probably be better suited to older children.
Able to live with cats: not tested but can be if required.
Age: 20 months
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes

Happy Ending: Percy has gone to an agility home in Scotland. (22/01/11)

PERCY

History: Percy has come to us for rehoming as he was not coping in the rescue kennels. He was originally bought in for nipping the children and pacing and barking in the garden. Since being here with us he has been very good, is fine with my son and shows no signs of pacing, so I believe he did not have enough to do.
Description: Percy is black and white collie with pricked ears. He is semi long coated so a quick brush and he is very handsome! He is toy and food motivated and very loving. He is good with other dogs and loves to play. He has quite strong chase instincts but comes when called, although this could be faster. He loves to learn, has high drive and would make an excellent agility dog. He travels well, can be noisy if bored, although this is improving all the time.
Rehoming criteria: Percy will need an experienced active home where he can continue his training. He is a lovely dog with loads of potential. He is very well-behaved in the house, but needs to go into a cage when you go out as he is a very good thief! He will need someone around for part of the day.
Child friendly: Yes, Percy would be okay with older children, but probably not best with younger children due to his past.
Able to live with cats: Probably. He shows chase instincts towards cats, but if they stand their ground he runs.
Age: 14 months
Sex: Dog
