Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 15 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Austin has found a home now. (10/06/09)

AUSTIN

History: Originally transferred from Ireland as a puppy with no history except a name. He was rehomed, but the owners ignored advice and didn't bother with training. When he became too strong and troublesome, they simply stopped walking him and kept him chained in the garden at which point we reclaimed him.
Description: Austin is a friendly, sociable semi-long coated black and white collie. Loves other dogs and fuss and cuddles. Knows nothing from a training point of view but loves both toys and treats and tries hard to please. If you want a ‘top flight’ agility dog you might be disappointed but if you want a sociable dog that just needs a bit of catch up on training and which you can have some fun with he is definitely your man.
Rehoming criteria: All members of family and any existing dogs will have to come to the centre to meet before he will be able to go home. Adopters can be anywhere in the country provided they are happy to travel. Adopters will have to attend a talk.

Happy Ending: Charley went to his new home on Friday. It is not an agility home, but they are considering starting agility with him. (22/06/09)

CHARLEY (REVISED)

History: Charley has come from a home where a mum with a baby and a toddler couldn't cope. He has spent large amounts of time crated and has not received the exercise and stimulation he requires.
Description: Charley is in excellent condition and is tri-coloured. He is a very bright boy and, at only 7 months old, he is a blank canvas - ready & willing to learn! He is self confident, very bright & eager to please, good with other dogs, good with children, loves people, loves toys, active, lively, but not manic. He loves to play. He is a very slender build and would make a great Agility dog. He is quite 'herdy' but this can be worked at. He has a tendency to chase cars, but was easily corrected when walking along the road. He travels well Is not too keen on the crate, but will happily sleep in it all night. He is housetrained and just a lovely dog to have around. Typical busy collie pup.
Rehoming criteria: Charley would love an active home.

Happy Ending: We hear that Jess has been rehomed. (29/06/09)

JESS

History: Jess has been with a family since two months of age but they were unable to manage her. I have taken her in with me for rehoming.
Description: Beautiful black and white collie, very friendly but can be a bit nervous. She likes balls and is very motivated by food. Has some basic obedience: sit, down, recall and will give her paw. She is gorgeous! She is very bright, energetic and quick to learn. She has some lovely traits and has real potential if her energy can be channelled. She has been good in the house and is cage trained. She is not good with my dogs but is very responsive to checking. She just needs to learn some boundaries.
Rehoming criteria: She needs an experienced handler who can give her the confidence she needs. Would suit a home where she will be active and preferably without young children.
Child friendly: Was reportedly growling at families children but has been absolutely fine with mine who are ages 8 & 10 and sensible with dogs.

Happy Ending: Merlot has gone to a wonderful agility home in Cambridgeshire.  (29/06/09)

MERLOT

History: Dual registered Border Collie from Canen lines. We have had Merlot since he was about 10 months old but we are emigrating and sadly will be unable to take him with us.
Description: Stunning looking red merle. Merlot is very, very fast and very, very toy orientated. He absolutely LOVES toys and will play all day if he can. He has done a bit of basic agility training and with his speed and motivation he has the potential to make someone an absolutely cracking agility dog. He can be very wary of strangers but once he gets to know you he is the most affectionate dog ever. Used to living with other dogs but can display the usual collie nip/herd traits. Loves travelling in the car. Okay to be left.
Rehoming criteria: Needs an experienced home with owners who will understand his behaviour and where he will get the mental and physical stimulation he needs.
Child friendly:
Currently lives with two children (aged 6 and 9) but might be better to go to a home with either adults only or maybe teenagers.
Able to live with cats: Yes, we have two and he pays no attention to them.

Happy Ending: Millie is still with us as my partner has very recently decided to give her one more go at home. (09/06/09)

MILLIE

History : Millie has lived with my partner for the past 18 months. He had hoped she would replace his old collie on the farm, but she has proved not to have the temperament required. She needs more than we are able to give her at the moment, since we have four other dogs at home and do not have the time or knowledge to get the most out of her.
Description : Millie is black and white, slim built and semi coated. She is very active and is constantly asking for things to do. She is toy mad and will respond well to commands. however, she will chase wheels and is not to be trusted with small children. We also suspect she was punished at one time with aerosol sprays as she has a distinct hatred of them. At home she is very loving and can be left happily on her own. She is good with other dogs once she realises they are no threat to her. She has never gone for any of the dogs we have boarded at home.
Rehoming criteria: Millie Needs an active home and we would dearly love her to go to a home that understands the breed and can possibly work her or at least give her the stimulation she needs.

Happy Ending: Jerry went last week to a pet home with an older Springer. (08/06/09)

 JERRY SPRINGER

History: Jerry came to me as a gift dog for detection work. He did not quite make the grade but I kept him on in the hope he would improve. It hasn't happened and I need to free up kennel space. He was abused in a past home and was nervous of men but we have cured that and he is now very social.
Description: He has the long back and short legs of a Clumber spaniel, giving him an almost basset-like appearance. Despite the long back, he is extremely agile. I have seen him scale more than 5 feet and clear a 4 foot jump. Other than that he looks all Springer (but may measure medium). He is a bit calmer than most and is brilliant with other dogs. So much so that I have used him as a demo dog with aggressive dogs.
Rehoming criteria: Jerry needs an active, loving home.

Better than Nothing: Unfortunately Spot has some behaviour issues that mean he is not suitable for rehoming at the moment so will be staying with the fosterer.  (11/06/09)

LEX (NOW CALLED SPOT)

History: Lex is a farm bred collie. He has lived in pet home since a puppy but now needs a new home due to relationship break up. He is registered but no papers have been provided yet.
Description: Lex is well-built, mainly white in colour with black markings on his face. He can be a little shy until he gets to know people, and is currently in a foster home.
Rehoming criteria: Lex is a young blank canvas and would benefit from basic obedience training, socialising and an active lifestyle.

Happy Ending: Ozzie and Brett have now been rehomed. Ozzie went to an active couple with a collie and Brett to an agility home with three Labs. (08/06/09)

OZZIE & BRETT

History: Ozzie and Brett were originally strays. We didn't want to split them at first but it has now proved better for both of them.
Description: Ozzie is a smooth-coated black tri while Brett is semi-coated black and tan and a bit more 'full on' than Ozzie. Brett is an active, friendly, loving boy - very clever and eager to learn. He will sit, give paw, fetch a toy bring and release on command. Brett has been fine around horses and chickens. Ozzie knows how to sit, is good in the car and good on the lead. Both are good with other dogs.
