Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 16 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Ben has now found a super new  agility home with Tony Butcher and his litter sister Leah so great things are expected of him later this year.  (07/03/11)

BENNI
(Redcharisma Stormtrooper)

History: Benni, was sold as a pet to a family with two children, aged two and six. I had nothing but glowing reports as to how well he was doing. He went to puppy class and came top of his class. Out of the blue I had a telephone call as the family circumstances had changed and they could no longer give him the time he deserved. He immediately settled in with my other collies – mum, dad, granny, uncle and one other but had few manners. He has now improved drastically!
Description: Benni is a very handsome, long coated B/W boy with naughty spots on his face and legs. He is very loving and super with people and other dogs.  He is very responsive to food or toys. For further info and photos see the website.
Rehoming criteria: A working home – obedience or agility is essential. He is very bright so does need an experienced handler.
Child friendly: Yes, he loves children but is a bit boisterous for very tiny ones.
Able to live with cats: He has met cats as a young puppy with no problem

Happy Ending: Chip is due to go to his new home soon. (08/03/11)

CHIP

History: Chip came into Battersea Dogs & Cats Home as a stray so we do not have any history.
Description: Chip is a medium-sized, shorthaired dog. He is a fun, loveable, clever canine! We are seeking an experienced home for Chip in a semi rural/rural environment. Chip is better suited to a low dog populated area to aid his training as Chip will need controlled socialising with other dogs as he can become OTT on introductions and recall training will be needed.
Rehoming criteria Chip will need good mental and physical stimulation and would enjoy a home with experienced owners who may be interested in agility training as Chip would love to have fun with his new owners meeting new doggy pals, keeping fit and picking up some prizes along the way. New owners should be prepared and dedicated to spend time training Chip. Chip is ready to get to work with further training and make his new owners proud that they chose a Battersea dog! Chip is not suitable to live with young children due to the need for consistent training and control to be maintained, a multi carer household where everyone can be involved in his training and routine. Chip is not able to live with another dog or cats.
Child friendly: Yes, but adult/teen home required.

Happy Ending: Cocoa has gone to live with a couple and their three other dogs. Both his new owners do agility so no doubt you will be seeing Cocoa around. (10/03/11)

COCOA

History: Cocoa is from Ireland, where she was taken from the pound so not a lot is known about her. She is only a baby and has no vices so will settle well.
Description: She is a lovely, red bundle of fun and quite fluffy so will be long coated, although don't think it will be that long! Cocoa is about 15-16 weeks old, so she still has her baby teeth, she has been through so much in her short life but is still very trusting and loving. She is confident, but not pushy. She gets on well with other dogs and fine with the cats. She has been an angel to look after, she is good in a crate, and off lead stays close. She will need some more lead training as she has not been on the lead before.
Rehoming criteria: Coca will need an active lifestyle, where she can use her collie brain!! She will also need someone around for part of the day in view of her age. She will fit into most households quite easily.

FIZZIE

History: Fizzie was a stray. She has done her seven days and has come over to Valgrays to find her forever home.
Description: Fizzie is totally yummy, lovely outgoing nature, fab off lead, very busy, fast, fun, loyal, loves to please and definitely the making of a superb mini agility dog. She is white and tan and, as you can see, all shaggy coated.
Rehoming criteria: A fun home for this lovely dog, she deserves it; she was very neglected when she came to us. However she is not for the faint hearted, as she is like a mini cooper on legs!

EGG

History: Egg and his litter brother Emu came from a farm and are being fostered for Many Tears Animal Rescue by Sarah Evans.
Description At the moment they are a little nervous so we are looking for a home where they will get lots and lots of socialising at this important time in their lives. They are looking for a nice active home with someone who will give him the exercise and mental stimulation that they need. He is such a sweet boy and looks forward to enjoying lovely long walks and fun training, whether that be obedience or agility when they're older. These puppies are very cute and fluffy but please only apply if you have the time and knowledge to put in with socialising now and exercise for many years to come.

Happy Ending: Flurry has gone down to London to live with the head mistress of the Ian Mikardo High School for abused children, where he will be working as the new school therapy dog, following the loss to cancer of their previous rescue dog, Missy!  (24/03/11)

FLURRY

History: Flurry was rescued from being PTS in an Irish dog pound after being dumped by his owner just before Christmas.
Description: Flurry is a finely-built, athletic collie-cross, with just the right amount of confidence, boldness and willingness to please to make him a fantastic agility prospect. He responds very well to kind training and clear rules. He is extremely eager to please, and will work for food, toys or simply a cuddle. Flurry is clean in the house and kennels, crate-trained, good in the car, confident and friendly with dogs and bitches of all sizes, and outgoing but polite with people. Flurry still needs basic obedience training and does pull on the lead, but is happy to wear a head collar.
Rehoming criteria: Flurry would thrive in an experienced agility home, and enjoys the company of other dogs. Since he is fairly new to life indoors, his new owner would have to be aware that a certain amount of puppy-proofing of their home may be required until he finds his feet. His adoption is subject to the usual checks.
Child friendly:
Yes, but with no past history, an adults-only home would be preferred.
Able to live with cats: Yes, will respect confident cats.

Happy Ending: Fly has gone to a flyball home... where else! (10/03/11)

FLY

History: Fly came from Ireland as unclaimed stray. He was in a terrible state and completely unloved and care for.
Description: Fly is a very small Collie boy who may have another smaller breed in his parentage? He is very thin at the moment weighing only 10kg. Despite his condition he is still full of fun and is such a lovely sweet boy. He has had some trimming done on his coat as he was very badly matted and has brushed up really well and is such a jolly dog. He has a very soft coat, and a lovely blue eye.
Rehoming criteria: A fun home and with his joy and bounce in life I think this lad would be a super agility dog. He would need to be measured as I think he would be medium height. Maybe HTM because he also has such a lovely action.

Happy Ending: Jamie has been rehomed. He has gone to a sheep trialing home where hopefully he will become an excellent sheepdog. (10/03/11)

JAMIE

History: Jamie came over from Ireland to find his forever home.
Description: He is a gentle boy, who gets on well with people and other dogs. He is good off lead and loves a cuddle. Jamie has lovely markings and is just getting his grown up coat, he will be a tall leggy boy, I think once he has finished growing.
Rehoming criteria: Jamie would love to go to a new home with someone around for part of the day, and to lead an active life to keep his collie brain entertained. Jamie gets on well with everyone and everything so would fit in with most homes.

Happy Ending: Jazz has gone to a beautiful new home with a lovely family with a teen-age son. Jazz gets four walks a day and has started dog training. (10/03/11)

JAZZ

History: Jazz was handed over to our rescue as her previous owners had been offered a job where it meant that Jazz would be left alone for very long hours, without any interaction.
Description: Jazz is a beautiful looking girl who loves to run and play with her ball - good flyball/agility potential - She gets on well with all other dogs, and young children, although can get a little too close to cats/small furries, but with further training she could possibly live with them (she is fostered with them currently). She travels well in the car and is good to be left in her crate for short periods of time.
Rehoming criteria:  She may be best to be rehomed without cats/small furries. She would definitely need a job to keep her mind busy!
Child friendly:
Yes. Jazz is capable of being homed with young children and/or young children.
Able to live with cats: Possibly, with some further work.

Happy Ending: Max's behaviour has improved so much that his owners have decided to keep him after all. (12/03/11)

MAX

History: We rescued Max and his dad a year ago. They had been taken to a rescue kennels because of a marriage break up.
Description: Max is a really lovely little dog - white in colour and very affectionate. He loves cuddles and is great in our family home where we have two boys, aged 8 and 12. The reason we sadly feel we can't keep him is because of his fear aggression towards men and bigger dogs. I do feel that, if given the time and training, this problem could be sorted. He also barks at our neighbours through the fence as we live in a mid-terrace house. He is very inquisitive, bright and quick to learn and I think given the chance he would really benefit from having a purpose like agility to focus on. Max is very loyal and the perfect dog around the home. He has lots of energy and responds well to training using treats and praise.
Rehoming criteria: Max is very well-behaved and a very loyal dog who loves to have fun. He tends to feel insecure and needs lots of love and affection. He needs someone who will be able to spend lots of time with him to build his confidence and let him enjoy the chance to be a fantastic agility dog. He may benefit from being in a detached house or with a garden where he can't see any immediate neighbours.

Leah Gardner is fostering Oakley and can tell you more about him. Tel. 01892 740777. Email: leah@anjuagility.co.uk

Happy Ending: Oakley has gone to a new home where they are going to do agility with him. (24/03/11)

OAKLEY

History: Oakley was rescued from the pound today where he was about to be put to sleep. Sadly, we don't know where he has come from or what he has been through; whether he has lived indoors or outdoors and whether he is housetrained or not. What we can tell you is that this stunning boy is very gentle and down to earth.
Description: Meet Oakley. He is a bit of a super star. Up to today I suspect Oakley has never been in a house, but he walked into the house, greeting each of my dogs beautifully. Initially he was scared of the TV but now he is quite settled with it. He met a cat today and whilst he was unsure what to make of it he was so responsive with the training that he immediately turned away from it. There is NO doubt that Oakley has one hell of a start to his life. He is emaciated and badly scarred. He has what looks like a wire scar across his nose and it is clear he has suffered badly, yet all he shows is love and trust. He walks well on the lead even though he has not done much of that. He started clicker training his recall, which he had nailed within a couple of tries! He has no idea of toys and when I threw a ball he hit the deck expecting a beating! One day later and an hour of Jay sat on the floor and Oakley now understands the delights of toys, and loves to play football with his tennis ball. He is so trusting, he learns so quickly, he is just great!
Rehoming criteria: We want Oakley to go to a home where his brains and natural ability are utilised. He would really love a nice active home where he will be given lots of exercise, love and attention. If you feel that you could be this please firstly read about Kelpies so you understand what they require. Whilst he is calmer than the average kelpie he will still need and want the mental stimulation to keep him as wonderful as he is, as he is just gorgeous in every way!

Contact: Liz Marshall at Wood Green Animal Shelters, Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, PE29 2NH.

Happy Ending: Pompom has happily found her home. The lady is very training minded so here's hoping that Pompom does not come back to the shelter.

POMPOM

History: Pompom came to us as a stray when she was about 7/8 weeks old, so we do not know anything about her.
Description: She is a very cute, fluffy tan girlie with a black stripe down her back, she looks as though she could be a Pomeranian x with maybe a Sheltie? Pompom would make a very good agility dog as she is quick to learn, clever, busy, nosey, and active and most definitely not a lap dog. Due to her looks she is going to attract the families that would want her for her X-Factor qualities and to be a lap dog. In the wrong hands this tiny puppy has the potential to be a right little madam, but will shine and blossom in the right training minded home.
Rehoming criteria: Pompom needs a positive reward based training minded home, that will work her brain. She is currently on foster at night with a member of staff that has 2 dogs of her own, so she could possibly live with another dog depending on how they mix. Due to Pompom being a puppy she needs someone at home most of the time as she is still working on her house training and she needs to learn that being left in the home on her own is a good thing. Even if she is to live with another dog she still needs to meet lots of different dogs regularly which she will do if she finds a training / agility home,
Child friendly: Pompom can live with children over the age of 10yrs old.

SPARKY

History: Sparky came into Battersea Dogs & Cats Home as his previous owners were moving and could not take him with them.
Description: Sparky is a shorthaired Collie X. He is a fun, energetic, loveable and clever dog who is ready to get to work with further training and make his new owners proud.
Rehoming criteriaSparky is looking for a home with experienced owners who may perhaps be interested in agility or fly ball training as Sparky would love to have fun with his new owners. We are seeking an experienced home for Sparky in a semi rural/rural environment. Sparky is better suited to a home with out any small animals such as cats or rabbits as he does like a game of chase. Sparky is looking for a multi-carer household where everyone can be involved in his training and routine.
Child Friendly: Sparky is not suitable to live with young children due to the need for consistent training and control to be maintained, however he could live with teenagers.

Happy Ending: Teasel has been rehomed and is now settled into her new home.  (27/03/11)

TEASEL

History: Teasel came from a loving family home with a stop-at-home mum, but financial circumstances changed and both mum and dad now have to work full time, meaning Teasel was left home alone all day.
Description: Teasel is an uncomplicated little girl with no issues. She is easy to live with as she has an on/off switch. She is a petite, slim built, lively, athletic and fast dog outside but is very sweet and cuddly indoors and loves to snuggle up. She is friendly with dogs and people and is very trainable. She has started some basic clicker training and can do Sit, Down, Wait, Come and Touch. She walks well in a harness and lead and is good off lead too. All in all a lovely little girl who will make the perfect companion.
Rehoming Criteria: Teasel is the right material for an agility home but would also be just as happy as a family pet with an active family. Homes will be vetted.
Child Friendly: Yes, has lived with a small child.

Happy Ending: Twm has been rehomed and may be doing agility in future.  (24/03/11)

TWM

History: Twm is a Welsh Collie x Kelpie. He is a failed cattle dog and is looking for a loving home.
Description: His fosterer collected him from the farm where he was living and took him home with her and this is what she says about him: I am astonished that for a dog that has only ever lived on a farm Twm is already clean in the house, crate-trained and very at home. When he first arrived I was worried about him marking in the house, though I have to say that I'm more than a little impressed at his ability to stop peeing mid flow when hearing a sharp 'NO.' He marked half a dozen times and now seems to understand that this behaviour is frowned upon in the house. He took to his crate immediately and has to share it a good deal of the time with my Collie Colin who thinks Twm is fabulous! Twm sleeps in his crate at night and I don't hear a peep out of him. He is great on the lead and walks well with the pack, off the lead still needs a little work as he likes to sniff and pops his head down and sets off at a trot. We are working on recall and he is making progress. He plays very well with my three dogs and has never shown any sign of aggression.
Rehoming criteria: We would like him to be able to use his brains productively. Agility could be right up his street! He is going to make someone a most fabulous companion. Not only is he as stunning as a fox but he is charming and affectionate as well. Please give him a look.
