Lucky dogs
The
fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs
have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear
anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 7 dogs found new homes, many of them
going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.
Dogs are featured in alphabetical
order.

Happy Ending:
Clem has found a home. He is now called Murphy. His new owners are lovely people
who are giving him lots of time and space to settle. They are outdoor types - keen
walkers and sailors. Murphy has already been out on their boat with his little life
jacket on - he looks so cute! He is proving to be a good sailor and they are
used to having a boat collie! Not an agility home but an excellent pet home so that is
wonderful! Diana (18/05/09) |
CLEM (NOW CALLED MURPHY)
History:
Clem was a stray picked up in a rural area of Dumfriesshire.
Description:
Clem is a handsome black and white collie. He is very toy orientated and thoroughly
enjoys a good game of tuggy. He also gives up his toy on
command. He will take treats and knows some obedience commands like sit, stay and
down. Clem is going stir crazy in kennels and is showing his frustration by barking and
lunging hysterically at anything on the other side of his cage mesh. Clem has threatened
and nipped when he was taken by the collar to move him away, but once outside the kennel,
he gets on well with people and other dogs. On the plus side, he has really good focus
which, if turned towards something positive like agility, could make him a super dog.
Rehoming
criteria: Clem
needs a home which will give him mental and physical stimulation. He needs time and
structure for his stress levels to drop to a manageable degree.

Happy Ending:
Cloud has gone to an active
home, to join 2 other collies and begin her agility training fairly soon.
(7/05/09) |
CLOUD
History:
Cloud came from a breeder, who was unable to sell her as she is deaf. She was
living locked in a stable along with her sister. However as she is not nervous, I imagine
the dogs must have been allowed some outdoor access. I have been fostering her now
since Nov 08 for the Dogs Trust. Although I have had some interest, sadly many people are
put off by her deafness.
Description:
She is mainly white with blue merle patches and blue eyes. Her coat is short/medium
length. Cloud is a very friendly girl, who loves everyone she meets. She gets on
well with other dogs and loves to play. Although she has lacked in socialising, she
is confident in the outside world and is to now used to being in a home. She is now
housetrained and able to be left for a few hours. She is a very bright dog, who is always
full of enthusiasm. Her training is coming along well and is typically very focused
during training sessions (it can be an advantage she can’t hear at times!). She is
good off lead and tends to stay close even when the other dogs are running around and she
has ignored any rabbits or geese that have been around while off lead. She is
easily motivated by both toys and food which makes training easy. She knows sit,
down, wait, stay, spin, paw, close and hand follows for heelwork.
Rehoming criteria:
Cloud would be
ideally homed in an experienced collie home as although deaf she is very much an active
girl. Training a deaf dog, does require patience, but is not difficult and advice will be
given; she loves her food and is willing to do anything for it.
Child friendly:
Yes, but would be best with children over 10yrs (poss younger if used to collies)

Happy Ending: Freya has
gone to her new home.
(20/05/09) |
FREYA
History:
Freya came into our care from a South Wales Pound.
Description:
Freya is a tri colour Collie, and
her eyes are an unusual pale, greeny grey
colour. She is very affectionate and very typical of the
breed. She is having some training in her foster home and recalls to a whistle. Her
foster mum is also doing some clicker training with her.
Rehoming
criteria: Freya will need someone home
most of the day to continue her training, and we do require all resident dogs in the home
to be neutered.

Happy Ending: Patch has gone
to a couple with another rescue JRT.
He’s settled in well and is enjoying his new life.
(20/05/09) |
PATCH
History:
Patch was taken to NAWT at about six weeks as a stray. He spent time at vets as had
problems with protein levels but is now fine. Patch was fostered for a couple of weeks
and then rehomed for two months. The new owner started to
work longer hours and Patch was barking and whining when left and the
neighbours were complaining. As a result he was returned.
Description: Patch is cute as a button! He
is quite a leggy Jack Russell type, with a face which is half black face and half white.
He is full of energy. We struggled to keep him still long enough for photo! He loves to
play ball and tuggy. He needs to be busy as he is keen to
learn.
Rehoming
criteria: Patch
needs a home where someone has time to deal with separation problems and redo his toilet
training - both of which were not a problem in his foster home. Ideally a home with other
dogs as he enjoyed their company in his foster home. Agility would be perfect for
him.

PTARMIGAN
History:
International Sheepdog Society papered (grandmother Swedish World Champion). He was
bought as children's pet and kept in kitchen. When he started
to herd the kids and chase cars at 4 months old, he was handed in for retraining and
rehoming.
Description:
Tri-colour, who is outgoing, high energy,
very focused.
He is always watching or listening for next instruction. He has an introduction to
agility and is already very confident and feel he would do
very, very well in this sphere with the right handler.
Rehoming
criteria:
This pup is never
going to be a normal pet. He is high maintenance. He will do something and then eyes to
you for his next instruction. He needs to work everyday.
He has just walked the Great Glen Way (76 miles) and he would happily do it again! A
special and experienced handler is a must - he is a sheep dog through and through but I
would rather him continue to live in a loving environment as he loves people and cuddles
too. I am happy to travel anywhere for a good home.

Shep is now staying with his fosterer and is already finding four substances after five
weeks including TNT! (17/05/09) |
SHEP
History:
Shep
was brought in by his owners as he did not get on with his mum anymore.
Description:
Shep is a very active and confident lad who needs
constructive stimulation. He is a cracking,
fun, loving boy who needs an equally matched home.
Rehoming
criteria: We are looking for experienced
owners who are knowledgeable of breed traits. Shep is a
little nervous with other dogs and will need fun and controlled socialising. He
could live with a mature adult dog aged 3 years+ in the right home. He needs a stable,
secure home in a semi-rural/rural location.
Child friendly:
Shep is not suitable to live with young children due to the
need for consistency with training however teenagers wiling to do fun sport will be
considered.

Spud has gone
to live with a young couple who have lots of land for him to play on & they want to take
him to agility classes. (20/05/09) |
SPUD
History:
Spud is a 9 month old
Staffordshire Bull Terrier who came to The Blue Cross from one of our hospitals in
London.
Description:
This cheeky chappy is a very energetic and loving dog
who requires a lot of attention and further training within the home. Here at the centre
we have been working on his handler connection and basic commands. He has been doing
extremely well and his intelligence shines through. As Spud is very active, a good game
of fetch is a great way to expel his excess energy, which will also help him, focus when
on the lead.
Rehoming
criteria: Due to Spuds exuberant nature
a family with teenage children and no other pets would best suit this wonderful boy. He'd
love to live with an active family and would enjoy exercising with them. Given time and
lots of love Spud will reward you with his best behaviour and
will become a loving and loyal friend.
