Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 13 dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

Happy Ending: Bailey has been rehomed.  (15/09/10)

BAILEY

History: Bailey came to the charity along with her brother who has now found a home. Her previous owners had longer working hours and couldn't find the time to exercise them.
Description: Bailey is a pretty black and white border collie with a very slight build and so is perfect for agility as she is very fast and agile. She loves to play with her toys and is very willing to learn.
Rehoming criteria: Bailey must go to an experienced collie home as she has some typical collie traits. Bailey is very active and always on the go so a working home is necessary.

Happy Ending: Brackon has been reserved and is on trial in his new home.  (27/09/10)

BRACKON

History:  Brackon was bought from a farm for a young teenage child.  A complete lack of guidance for either pup or child combined with his size has resulted in him becoming too much to look after. The family were going to have him PTS after Brackon nipped the boy in excitement but he had never been shown that this was unacceptable. He is learning now!
Description: Brackon is like a 'baby puppy.' He leaps and jumps about with little thought for himself or anyone else and regularly loses his legs when running about. He is fun and lively and would like mental and physical exercise every day. Brackon is a blue Tri Merle - a tall boy of medium build and short-coated.  Brackon loves chasing toys and playing raggy games with you. He is a very gentle and loving boy but does get quite boisterous in play as he is a big lad!  He is going to bond very quickly and closely to whoever takes him on and as he thinks everything is fun I think he would take to agility like a duck to water. He has very little in the way of formal training, but he will respond well to clicker training once he is encouraged to think and apply himself a little more. In spite of this, he does seem very good at communicating with other dogs and is extremely playful. Brackon settles well in the house, is housetrained, quiet at night and is good in the car crate.  More pictures and updates on his Facebook page http://tinyurl.com/brackon.
Rehoming criteria: He is looking for someone who has had a young Border Collie before and is able to take on a puppy who has had very little guidance.  This is especially so with ragging and chase behaviours, plus all the usual lead pulling, lunging at traffic etc. that you get with border collies. I think Brackon could live as part of a pack and may well be better off with other dogs as he is currently living with a neutered female. He will take a little work to shape up but he is so loving and kind natured I can promise you will not hesitate to fall in love.
Child friendly:
Brackon is being fostered with a 4 1/2yr child and I would consider homing with children to the right home.
Able to live with cats: Not tested but probably unlikely as high chase drive.
Age:  10 months

Neutered:  No, but must be done when old enough.

FLYNN & SAMMY

History: Flynn & Sammy came into Pupsneedinghomes from Ireland. They were from of a litter of puppies that the owner was unable to sell.
Description: Flynn (top) is an affectionate boy who is good on lead, and would benefit from further general training. Sammy (Bottom) is a very bright and intelligent lad who is a friendly boy and is good with other dogs. He also walks very well on the lead and loves to play. He is very affectionate and loves cuddles.
Rehoming criteria: They would enjoy active homes with Collie experience. The dogs are not looking to be homed together, but Flynn must live with another dog in order to develop his confidence around people.

Description: Gemini is so so clever. I have agility collies and she is every bit as clever as them. Gemini is very intelligent and willing. She is food, people and toy orientated and would be fab for agility. She is small at the moment (7.2kg) and will probably make Medium size.

She is fast and accurate and her previous owner who had started her training says she was showing great potential. She travels well in the car and is housetrained

Happy Ending: Jock is Jock is officially homed as his foster family has got so attached to him that they are keeping him. (28/09/10)

JOCK

History: We don’t really know much about his history apart from he belonged to an elderly man who had to go into hospital long term and the relatives were going to have him put to sleep. I don’t think he had been socialised as he was wary of everything when I had him.
Description: He is a large lively dog who is a little bit nervous of some people and tends to bark at them when he is out but is very friendly when in the house.
Rehoming criteria: I think Jock would make a good agility dog as he is bright with loads of energy and is very fast.

Happy Ending: Marley has found his forever home.  (16/09/10)

MARLEY

History: Marley has had two homes already and was proving to be to boisterous due to lack of exercise. He has lived with children but can be a little bouncy. I am currently fostering him until he finds a new home.
Description: He is a labrador X staffie and is about the size of a small collie. Has had basic training and has a good recall, although will need training further particularly whilst on the lead. He is good with other dogs and wants to play but can be a little bit giddy at first.
Rehoming criteria: A forever home as this boy wants someone to call his own. He would make a great agility or flyball dog as he is active and loves to jump He has already started some basic flyball training.

Once Paddy understands he is not in charge, he is a lovely boy. He has done his Bronze, Silver and Gold Good Citizens training and has completed some agility training days which he really enjoyed.
Description: He is a very affectionate and loving little dog, who loves to learn new things and is very obedient. He loves being around other dogs.

Description: Paris is full of life, very interested in people and toys and food. She is fantastic with dogs, cats, kids, and travels well. She is due her second vaccination next week then can start going out on walks..

Happy Ending: Silk, the collie x GSD, has been rehomed. (27/09/10)

SILK

History: Silk has been brought into us by her owners. She was originally brought over to the UK from Hungary and due to changes in family circumstances she has ended up being brought into the kennels.
Description: Silk is a sable and tan crossbreed. She is an extremely agile dog and would, therefore, be great at agility. Taking on the collie has meant that Silk is a smaller framed girl. She loves everyone and anyone and absolutely enjoys her toys. Silk is very eager to please and, once you have gained her concentration, she is quick to learn and respond. Silk also goes to our obedience classes and has picked up on the basic commands extremely quick.
Rehoming criteria: Silk needs to go to a home with someone who is able to provide her with the drive and exercise that she needs. As she needs the mental stimulation, Silk makes an ideal candidate for an agility dog as she is constantly on the go. At the kennels we have our own agility course, and Silk is willing to do everything even on her own accord and following her own course. Due to her eagerness to please. Silk loves attention from everyone, although we would recommend that she went to a home with older children due to how lively and jumpy she can be.
Child friendly: Yes. She has never lived with children, but has met young kids when out on walks and she has a tendency to jump up them and give them a kiss for this reason we would recommend older children as she would be less likely to knock them over if she was to jump.
Able to live with cats: Yes, she previously lived with a kitten which she treated like a puppy. However, she has barked at older cats.
Age: 16 Months
Sex: Bitch
Neutered: No
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: Set rescue donation  £150

Happy Ending: Sky, the car chasing gorgeous collie, has a home - not an agility home but an active pet home way out in rural Galloway.  They are experienced collie people who have recently lost an old dog.  It has only been a few days but, so far, the feedback is excellent so we hope it will stick! (09/09/10)

SKY

History: Sky has lived with two adults since he was a puppy. He was handed in to the rescue centre because the owners could not cope with his car chasing behaviour.
Description: Sky is a handsome collie with a medium coat and an athletic build. He travels well in the car and is house trained. He has met visiting grandchildren with no problems. He is very affectionate and biddable. His one vice is chasing – cars, bicycles, joggers etc! However, it is possible with patience and perseverance to train a collie to exert self-control and, this drive can be harnessed to produce a fantastic agility dog.
Rehoming criteria: Experienced owner who knows what they are doing with a lovely sensitive high drive collie.
Child friendly:
Yes, but probably best with older children.
Able to live with cats: Unknown, but will probably chase.
Age: 2 years
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes

Happy Ending: Thistle has now been homed to a super family as a pet dog.  Thank you to everyone who showed interest in adopting this gorgeous boy.
. (27/09/10)

THISTLE

History: None known. This dog was due to be put to sleep at a council pound and I took him in at the 11th hour to save and rehome him.
Description: Thistle is a stunning looking liver and white Springer cross (probably collie).  He is in great condition and his coat gleams.  He is a fit and active dog and would need a home to match.  He is housetrained, doesn't chew, great with other dogs, has been with children including a visiting five year old and one year old and has been fine. Thistle is still very young and sometimes barks a little in new situations, but I am working on this with reward training this is getting less and less, and he is now understanding life is good! Thistle has been to several dog shows and has been brilliantly behaved. He has met people and dogs and has been very good mannered. He travels brilliantly and cannot wait to get into my van at the start or end of the walk.  This is the most loving boy at home. He will lay at your feet - or on them. if possible - and rarely leaves my side. He is crate trained since being with me and sleeps soundly at night.
Rehoming criteria: Thistle would benefit from a home where they understand Springers and also where he would be given lots of exercise and stimulation/training.  He would simply love to do something like flyball or agility. With good training I am sure he could turn his paw to anything.  He loves to learn and has been quick to learn new things since being with me.  He is currently being trained with clicker type methods.  He will need someone willing to continue with his reward based training. Food is best with him, but he also loves a bally. His recall, sit, down, wait etc have improved hugely every day. Considering he has only learnt his new name this last few weeks, he has responded really well. Thistle can live with other dogs.
Child friendly:
Yes, stayed for 24 hours in a temporary home where there were young children, however I would prefer to rehome with older children due to his lively/bouncy nature.
Able to live with cats: Not tested
Age: 8-10 months old
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Being done soon
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: Donation to cover castration, vaccination etc.
Where dog can be seen:  East Grinstead, West Sussex (30/08/10)
