Collie wanted by an ex-police dog handler for special project... I am an ex-police dog handler, currently working in the civilian sector as an explosive detection search dog handler on a major project in the UK. I currently work a cocker for this purpose, however as the workload has increased, I need to add to my dog team. Having worked Borders in my youth and early 20s, I’m after a working collie, between 9-18 months old although I will consider a slightly older dog, depending on its qualities. The qualities I’m looking for in a potential trainee are as follows:-
Any dog will be guaranteed a good working home, with plenty of daily physical and mental
stimulation. My dogs are not just tools of the trade, they form part of my family and
household. I also own a 10 year old Brittany and a 5 year old GSD, therefore a dog friendly
collie would be of great benefit! I keep all of my dogs as pets upon retirement. None are
re-homed. |
![]() Kim Blundell SORTED I have now reached 1000 responses to the questionnaire. I am really staggered that so many people took the time and trouble to do that for me, my tutor cannot believe I got 1000 responses, I think its the most ever. I will let you know what I find when my assignment is all marked, but as my tutors are looking to see if it can be published in a scientific journal your wait may be a little longer, but I will not forget. Stephanie Fleig. (13/02/11) |
Queuing questions... For the past six months as part of my dissertation for my honours degree in Animal Welfare and Behaviour, I have been monitoring some of your lovely dogs whilst they have been standing in the queue. To complete my study, I am in need of around 1000 responses to a short questionnaire (10 questions) on your opinions of queuing with your dog prior to performing. The survey will take you around 3-4 minutes to complete and can be accessed online by clicking on the link below. All responses will be totally anonymous and all data obtained will be destroyed after completion of the study in April of this year. Please click on the link below or copy and paste the address to access the survey http://surveymonkey.com/s/2J2MRBY. Contact: Email Stephanie Fleig at trewinneyfarm@aol.com. Thank you and good luck for 2011. |

Does your dog have arthritis? |
Desperately seeking... dogs for an arthritis study I am a vet and arthritis researcher at the University of Liverpool. based at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital on the Wirral. We are currently conducting a study of treatments for arthritis in dogs. At least 20% of dogs over the age of one are affected by osteoarthritis – a degenerative disease that leads to loss of function, inflammation and pain of the joints. We know from humans that have this disease that it has a huge and negative impact on quality of life. In relatively athletic animals like dogs, that get a lot of their pleasure from physical activity, the effects are likely to be much larger. Add to this that signs can be difficult to spot (60% of the dogs I have seen with arthritis over the last year have not had previous treatment, despite significant loss of mobility), and it is easy to see why we consider arthritis to be a welfare concern. The study we are conducting is a comparison trial of two licensed treatments. We do not use a placebo, and there is no 'novel' or 'experimental' drug. We are simply trying to gather information on how best to treat and assess this condition in dogs. We need canine volunteers who are over the age of one, over 10kg in weight, and whose owners believe might be suffering with arthritis. Signs to look out for include limping, reluctance on walks and stiffness after rest. (24/02/11) Contact: Owners who might be interested in involving their dog should contact me at ben.walton@liv.ac.uk, or on tel. 0151 795 6239. Web site: http://www.liv.ac.uk/dog-arthritis/ |

Judge for Dalmatian Club Agility Show The North of England Dalmatian Club over the last seven years has held an Agility & Obedience event limited to Dalmatians only on Sunday following its breed Championship show. There is no one on the committee sufficiently experienced or with appropriate knowledge in either event, however will support both events in anyway it can. The last two years we have found it increasingly difficult to find Agility judges who are willing to judge what is really termed a less formal event but which follows the agility regulations. The purpose is to make it a fun day with structure and to raise interest for Dalmatian people, who hopefully will go on to compete in other competitions. The event is held alongside the Obedience event and takes place on Sunday, 17 July 2011 at Stafford County Showground. (11/02/11) Contact: If any one is interested or can put us in touch with someone in the Stafford area please either email Rose Lamb on rose.lamb@dalington.gov.uk or dalpetro@tiscali.co.uk or telephone 01325 33943. |

Advice on exercise induced hypothermia (EIH) I've been reading through the article on your website regarding exercise induced hypothermia. My Border Collie has this problem, and I'm looking for solutions. I'm using most of the recommendations except the diet changes. The article recommends BARF, and feeding only at night? Exercise-induced Hyperthermia (EIH) I came across your article about dogs over-heating. I have a 20 mo male rottie that has always had issues with being too hot, even as a little baby. He was born in the winter and his mother would always seem to dump him off the warm blankets on to the cooler box floor and he was never one to cuddle up to her. As he grew he never wanted to stay in the sun and when exercising he would over heat VERY quickly. He is super high drive - I refer to him as my BC on crack - and does nothing at a moderate pace. I want to get his AD which is a 12mi bike ride. They have to do 5mi (20 min rest), 4mi (30 min rest) and then 3mi. But I get to 2 mi with him and he is so over heated (temp 106.4) that I can’t go on. He is not tired, just over heated. This dog is very fit. He comes home and lays in his pool and his temp goes down to 100.3 in a half hour or less. Is there any more info on this condition? Any other resources to look at? How do we deal with this? He is a working dog but I am worried about this over heating thing. I have started giving him CO-Q 10. Any help would be appreciated. Lost agility dog... Rags (Manytears Rags to Riches A/WG) Rags went missing on 2 September near Frankley Services (M5). Originally a rescue, she has recently gone G7, having worked her way through problems such as preferring to go to the cake stall. Dobermans or GSPs who are trained
at agility to take part in my dissertation. It involves having markers (mini bingo balls) attached to different points on their bodies (backs and legs) so must be comfortable being handled. They will then need to jump over two different heights of jump three times whilst I record it. Ideally they need to be able to get to Hartpury College in Gloucestershire as need to use the specific flooring in the arenas. All owners will get a thank you bottle of wine and all the dogs also get a bag of chews. Calling all North East Dog Owners and Enthusiasts The new Facebook page 'Northumberland Dog Services' is looking for everyone in the North East who is interested in dogs. We want all the businesses in the North East, no matter how big or how small, to be listed under their region in the discussions board, and also be available to answer any questions people may have. You are free to post on the wall with links, events, competitions, offers, and anything you think people may be interested in. It is a resource for you to use. We have a discussion board with 15 topics that list services by region, but also include spaces for charities and rescues, dog training, Q&A, events, dog activities (great for shouting about agility wins), and much more. We want this page to become a community of all things dog related in the Northumberland/North East area, and it can become the meeting place for all ages. In order for it work you need to share, share, and share again. The more people the more variety and the more rich the page becomes with information. Use this as a platform to reach new clients or let people know more about your business, charity or event, the possibilities really are endless. Not only that, but we are in the middle of developing an app on Facebook that will allow anyone to search for anything dog related in the North East just by using their postcode. So if you’re not part of it, then people can't find you or connect with you. (15/10/11) Contact: So please come along and 'like' our page, check our notes and posting information and be part of an exciting opportunity that is developing and help us spread the word by sharing. Trying to find access to a secure area with agility equipment that I can rent on a private
basis. Ideally, as it's winter, it would be indoors however I'd be keen to hear about any outdoor places, too. I have a fear aggressive rescue dog. We have been doing ability for several months now which he loves however, due to his behavioural problems, he cannot be let off lead around other dogs or strangers. I would like to be able to rent access to equipment for half an hour or so, so that we can relax, have fun and train properly off lead. He is already familiar with all of the equipment and contact points etc, so we don't require a 1:1 session with a trainer. I'd also prefer not to have any strangers in the room if he is going off lead. I am near Richmond, West London and I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance in the surrounding area and Surrey etc. (23/11/11) Contact: Anyone who might be able to help, please email at Amanda Hogan at choccie_button@yahoo.co.uk |

Stand-in driver available for agility shows I used to drive my ex-partner to agility shows and miss the days out. We would go to shows all over the country from afar a field as North Lancashire and Newbury. We had a hi-top, long-wheelbase Ford Transit van fitted out with cages and a living area etc. If any agility people require a driver occasionally, I would be more than happy to do it - in this case for a fee though. Mature person, 56 with clean driving licence and also ex-military (six years in RAF.) Punctual and Reliable. Very good with all types of dogs (especially terriers) I would include exercising dogs, if more than one while owner is in ring. This would have to be weekends only as I have full-time job during the week. If needed for a two day show, then I would need to know in advance. My area is West Cheshire/North Shropshire/North Wales Border. (02/11/11) Contact: Ring Bruce Kennerley on m: 07561 308236 or email: BK7663@btinternet.com |
