December 2011

Finally after a long wait , here are the updated STB League tables up to 21 November. The results so far are quite exciting with several handlers and their dogs moving up to higher grades this year, so well done to you all.

Leading the table at the moment is Adrienne Atkinson with Tessa with a total of 283 points. Tessa (G7) is a Scottie X. Well done! In 2nd place is Susan Seal with Mac who is a Westie. Mac moved up to Grade 2 in April and became a Champion in Steeplechase in September. He has the highest number of points for Jumping classes. Susan must be so pleased with him. Well done to you both.

Not too far behind the leaders in 3rd place is young Megan Drinkall with her Cairn Terrier, Alfie. They too have had a very good season with Alfie moving up to Grade 4 in April and Grade 5 this last weekend. Having a Cairn myself, I know how hard it is to do agility with them, so well done, Megan.

Carol Hodgkins and her son Jack both run Elly and Nelly who are both Grade 3 Cairns. Carol tells me that Elly won out of Beginners Steeplechase in March - a very good result.

Sorcha with Crisp at CruftsSorcha Price & Crisp
I received this information
from Sorcha Price, explaining why Crisp has no results as she has been retired due to injury.

Here is what Sorcha Price: 'Our son was born on 13th April, only 12 days late! He is lovely. We have called him Toby and the dogs have accepted him, which was a relief as my Collie is very nervous. As for Crisp, an MRI scan revealed she has a deformed pelvis and would always have had this. It's amazing that she did as well as she did. Once I start back with agility, I'm going to try and do Anysize classes. She can manage jumps okay but I will no longer ask her to do A-frames and weaves. Not sure about UKA classes as Casual includes weaves and Champ Steeplechase.'

New members
We've had several new member to the League this year. Welcome to Stephen Laidlow with his two Cairn Terriers - Coco and sorry I don't know the name of the other one who sadly had her cruciate ligament ruptured at Easter. I do hope she is better? Stephen joined us in April.

Other new members include:-

  • Gillian Pringle with Indy, also a Cairn, joined us last December.

  • Teresa Wood with Pebbles, a Westie joined us in January.

  • Karen Boardman with Frost, a Westie joined us in July. So far we've not had any results from them, but this too is their first year competing.

One of our newer members, Gillian, with her Cairn Indy started as Grade 1 and has now moved into Grade 2. Again this is their first year competing and as Gillian says, they have had plenty of Es running Gillian’s version of the course but now Indy has worked it out they should do better.

Pebbles I met up with another of our new members this weekend, Teresa with Pebbles, a Westie, and what a delightful dog Pebbles is. She and Tinker hit it off straight away but it didn’t help with either’s performance as neither got anywhere! But we had an enjoyable day. Teresa sent me a photo of Pebbles. She certainly looks like she is having a lot of fun!

We now have 18 dogs in the League -  12 Cairns, 4 Westies, 1 Cairn Cross/Westie and 1 Scottie/Cross. Always room for more, however, so  if there is anyone else wanting to join us, please get in touch by email ockcairns@yahoo.com or ring tel. 01869 322996. It is free to all Terrier breeds that originated from Scotland; West Highland Terriers, Cairns, Skye, Scottish terrier, Dandie Dimonts and any crosses.

April 2011

The first report for 2011 starts with two lovely pictures of the Scottish Terrier Breeds League Winner for 2010 - Mary Morgan with her cairn terrier and Misty with her rosettes. Misty will be 12 years this year. What an achievement!

We have two new members to welcome this year. Welcome to Gillian Pringle with her cairn terrier, Indy and Teresa Wood with her Westie, Pebbles. I look forward to receiving results from Indy soon. Pebbles is too young to compete at the moment, but Teresa says her first show will be in June.

Below is the first table of results for 2011. Already we have Louise and Millie moving up to Grade 2 on points. Well done.

Elly, a cairn jointly owned and run by Carol and Jack Hodgkins, has also won out of Beginners Steeple Chase at their first UKA show in March. With this result and two other first places as well as a 2nd, they are now in 1st place in the table with 39 points! They are followed closely by Ollie, who belongs to Nikki Barbar. It looks like Ollie has recovered from his injuries last year and is already back on form and 2nd in the table with 34 points. Again, well done Ollie. All the rest has done you some good!

Adrienne with Tessa and Laura with Kai are in joint 3rd  place with 30 points, while Megan and Alfie are just behind them in 4th place so well done to you all. I know there haven’t been too many shows so far but we are beginning the season so good luck to you all and I look forward to receiving your results

More exciting news is that Laura Mandelson with her other dog Rudi has been picked to represent Scotland in the World Agility show in a few weeks time so good luck to them both.

And last but by no means least, Tinker and I have actually managed to complete a course (Beginners Steeple Chase) with no faults and in time to give us a 3rd place. I was so pleased that at last he has got his act together. I hope it wasn’t just a one off!

If anyone wants to join this group please email me on ockcairns@yahoo.com or phone me on 01869 322996

STB Agility League Final Results 2010

We have seen many changes in the League this year and some of our lovely dogs have been out of action due to injuries or illness.

Crisp, a cairn belonging to last year's overall winner Sorcha Price had to be retired from agility this year due to illness. I hope she is doing well and not missing the agility too much?

In May, Ollie a cairn belonging to Nikki Barber tore his cruciate ligament and had to have an operation to repair it. Nikki is hoping to get him back to agility this January so look forward to seeing Nikki and Ollie in action again. Nikki informs me that she has a new eight month cairn terrier Bramble so will we see them doing agility next year?

Mary Morgan and Adrienne Atkinson both had leg injuries themselves earlier in the year which curtailed their agility shows but from the results it looks like Mary is better. I hope Adrienne is too?

2010 was an excellent year for some of our members
Exciting news from Suina Rogers as Jodi, her cairn, won Grade 6-7 Agility Olympia Qualifier at the Avon Show in June as well as one of the Crufts DFS qualifier classes winning combined 6/7 agility in May. We will look forward to seeing them at Crufts. I haven’t heard how they did at Olympia?

In January, Deidre Munro and Rhum (Cairn) moved into Grade 2 and Adrienne and Tessa (Scottie cross) won into Senior, They are in Grade 7.

In February, 13 year old Cairns Megan Drinkall and Alfie managed to move out of Grade 1 and into Grade 2. Then in July, they won into Grade 3. Another one of our younger handers Alice and her Westie Hector also moved up to Grade 2 in February. Then topping that achievement they qualified for the DINAS finals in August. Well done to them both.

June saw Laura Mandelson and Kai (cairn cross Westie) moving up to Grade 5.

Final results for 2010
Congratulations go to Mary and Misty (Cairn) from Ireland who are our overall winners this year, scoring a total of 270 points. They were overall 2nd last year. Mary and Misty need to watch out this year as Megan and Alfie were overall 2nd this year, collecting a staggering 233 points. What a marvellous achievement for 13 year old Megan and Alfie. Well done to you both.

In 3rd place was Susan Seal and Mac who is a Westie with a score of 215 points. Laura and Kai managed to get 4th place with 209 points and Adrienne and Tessa were in 5th place with 163 points. Well done to you all, the rosettes will be with you soon.

Needless to say that I have not run Tinker in competitions this year, but he is doing well at shows running NFC so this year we will try a few competitions and see how we get on.

At the end of the year we have lost a few members. The league consists of 11 Cairn Terriers, three West Highland Terriers, one Cairn/ Westie X and one Scottie X. We have one new member and welcome Gillian Pringle and Indy, another Cairn terrier. This makes 16 members. If you would like to join, please do email Jennie Fairweather at ockcairns@yahoo.com

October 2010

This year the STB League has gone from strength to strength although we appear to have several members who appear not to have had any wins to report - or have you forgotten to send them to me? I hope that this is just a tiny setback for you all.

I know that Nikki Barbar's Ollie injured his leg earlier in the year, tearing his cruciate ligament. He's has had to have an operation to repair it which has meant he has had to have complete rest from agility. Hopefully they will be competing once again next year. Have a look at him swimming to build up his muscles again on Facebook. Despite this set back, he is 7th in the league. Get better soon, Ollie.

Another bit of very sad news comes from Sorcha who owns Crisp. Sorcha said that Crisp has been diagnosed with Lumbosacral Disease and, as a result, she's had to retire him from agility at only age seven. I’m sure we all send Crisp big hugs.

At the moment, we have a good spread of agility grades in the League with several dogs moving up to higher grades this season. In all, we now have three dogs in Grade 7, one Grade 6, two Grade 5, three Grade 3,  one Grade 2 and 11 dogs in Grade.

Several of our members are having a fabulous season.
First, Adrienne and Tessa won into UKA Senior in January. They are Grade 7 in KC competitions.

Several Grade 1 dogs have moved up to Grade 2 including  Deidre and Rhum (January), Alice Weston and Hector (July) and Megan and Alfie (February) and then they went into Grade 3 in July -  a very good achievement for them all. It was a wonderful achievement for our two young handlers, Alice (15) and Megan (11). Well done to you both. Watch out you Grade 7 dogs.

Our congratulations also go to Laura Mandelson and Kai who moved up Grade 5 in June.

The most exciting news that Suina Rogers and Jodi won 1st place in Grade 6-7 Agility Olympia qualifier. How exciting!

The League Table
The current leader is Mary Morgan and Misty, a Grade 7 Cairn Terrier from Ireland. They have a total of 244 points so far. In 2nd place is Laura with Cairn/Westie X Kai with 195 points. Kai is a Grade 5 agility dog. Megan will be delighted to know that she and Alfie are running in 3rd place in this League with a total of 185 points, just behind Laura and Kai. Megan’s Mum tells me that Megan trains Alfie herself. As Alfie is a Cairn Terrier, I know from first hand experience how hard that is so well done to you both especially as Alfie is now a Grade 3 dog. And they have only been doing agility for two years!.

In 4th place is Susan with Mac, a Grade 1 dog. Vvery well done on your placing. In 5th place are Adrienne and Tessa with 105 points. Tessa is a Scottie X and is in Grade 7. I have to included Alice in this report as she and Hector, her Westie, are in 6th place. Hector is a Grade 2 dog in this League as well as Alice being another of our younger handlers – well done Alice and Hector.

Tinker and I have not done any shows during the summer but I have entered him in Corton at Wootton Bassett (20 November). We have been on several agility training camps over the summer so here’s hoping something has rubbed off and he will be doing agility and jumping at long last?

We have not had any new members join us this year but if there is anyone who wants to join us, just email me – Jennie on ockcairns@yahoo.com. Your dog must be of Scottish descent i.e. originally be a Scottish terrier breed.

May 2010

We have three new members to the League so far this year so please make Carol and Jack Hodgkins welcome. Jack is 11 years and runs his mother Carol’s cairns Nell and Elly. Nell is running 8th in the league and Elly joint 7th along with Suina and Jodi, Sue and Mac and Alice and Hector.

The third of our new members to welcome is Alice and Hector, a Westie. Both doing very well especially as Alice is 15 years of age. It is very nice to see that our younger members are doing so well so watch out the adults! If you see me at any shows do come over and say hello.

These are the results for May 2010 for the league. We have a new leader – Adrienne and Tessa with 99 points so far. Well done to them. Tessa is a Grade 7 agility dog. Nikki and Ollie, Grade 5, are following closely behind with 79 points but haven't won as many shows as Tessa so they still have time to catch up or is the thought of getting a new small dog taking too much concentration for Nikki?

There is a bit of a fight for 3rd place between Laura with Kai, Deirdre with Rhum and Megan with Alfie. It is so good to see that Megan is beginning to do well with Alfie, moving up to Grade 2. I know how frustrating Cairns can be to do agility!

Please email me your results for the next results table.

March 2010

The season this year seems to be slow taking off but here are some results. The most exciting thing to report so far is that Megan and Alfie have won into Grade 2. Well done to them both. Grade 3 here they come! Also Deirdre and Rhum went into Grade 2 in January so well done to them too.

So far the leader of the 2010 League is Laura and Kai with 30 points, followed closely by Megan and Alfie with 24 points. Louise and Nikki have drawn for 3rd place with 19 points. Good luck to everyone this year.

January 2010

The results for the Scottish Terrier Breeds Agility League for 2009 have been finalised.

Sorcha Price & Crisp at CruftsThe overall winner of the League is Sorcha Price with Crisp who won with a total score of 251. Crisp is a Grade 6 agility Cairn Terrier. The results were for 63 classes. They also finished 27th in the Small Grade 6  Agility Club tables. Well done to Sorcha Price and Crisp.

In 2nd place was Mary Morgan with her G7 Cairn Terrier Misty. They had a score of 244 - just ten points below Crisp. They only had 26 classes so not as many as Crisp but still a good achievement. Well done. During 2009, Misty also gained her Gold Agility Warrant. What an achievement!

In 3rd place with 219 points is Adrienne Atkinson with Tessa, a Scottie X who started the year as a Grade 4 dog. In May, Tessa won out into Grade 5. In June, she became a Grade 6 dog and in August she won into Grade 7. The results are for 32 classes. A very good performance throughout the year. Well done to them both.

Nikki Barber and Ollie, another Cairn, finished in 4th place with a score of 141 out of 36 classes, having been the leader for July’s results. They too have had a very good year. Ollie started the league as a Grade 4 dog and won into Grade 5 in May. In the UKA Agility, Ollie moved to UKA Senior in Performance Level in May and went from Beginners to Novice Steeplechase in April. They also finished 20th in the Small Grade 4 Agility Club tables.

Louise Palmer and her Cairn Terrier Milly were 9th in the League and was placed 43rd in The Agility Club Small Grade 1 tables. It was good to see three Cairns placed in the Agility Club Tables for 2009.

Megan Drinkall (11) and her Cairn Alfie were 1st in the Grade 1 dogs, gaining 53 points. This is such a brilliant achievement for her as training Alfie has been quite hard work. Well done on your achievement.

At the end of the year, the League has 19 members – ten Cairn Terriers, three West Highland Terriers, one Scottish Terrier, two Skye Terriers, one Cairn Westie cross and two Scottie crosses. It is good to see a mixture of terriers.

Jennie Fairweather said, I have enjoyed setting up this League and I am glad the handlers want to continue. If there is anyone else wanting to join, please get in touch by email ockcairns@yahoo.com or ring tel. 01869 322996. Membership is free to all terrier breeds that originated from Scotland including West Highland Terriers, Cairns, Skye, Scottish Terrier, Dandie Dimonts and their crosses.'

'Send me all you wins from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2010. Once again I would like to congratulate all the winners for 2009 and to wish you all a very happy and successful agility new year.'

Thank you to the Midland Cairn Terrier website and the Cairn Terrier Rescue Fund web site both of whom have put the STB league results on their website.

October 2009

We welcome two new handlers to the Scottish Terrier Breeds League. Linda Hasker has two Skye Terriers doing agility competitions – Mop and Poppy who are both in Grade 1. They start in the League at 9th place for Poppy and joint 12th place for Mop, tied with Margaret Ehrenberg and Tigger. Look out you cairns you are being chased by a Skye Terrier!

The other handler to be welcomed to the League is Deirdre Munro with Rhum, a Cairn Terrier. They too are in Grade 1 agility and come straight in to 12th place.

What a few months of agility competitions have done to the league results with a lot of movement in the placings! Cairns are still leading. Who said Cairns can’t do agility! When you break the results down by Jumping and Agility classes, it looks like the Cairns prefer the Agility classes to the Jumping classes but only just!

We have a new handler on the leader board. Mary Morgan and Misty, her Grade 7 Cairn, have moved up from 5th place to 1st with a whopping score of 241 points. Mary also has informed me that Misty got her Gold Agility Warrant in June. What an achievement for them both and well done!

Sorcha Price and Crisp, a Grade 6 cairn, stay in 2nd place, having achieved a score of 201 points, while Nikki Barbar and Ollie, a Grade 5 Cairn, dropped down to 3rd place with a score of 135 points. This is still a brilliant score.

Laura Mandelson and Kai, a Cairn/Westie X, in Grade 4, slipped from 3rd to 4th place but still have a good score of 92 points. Suina Rogers and Jodi, a Grade 6 Cairn, also drop from 4th to 5th place with 75 points.

The Grade 1 dogs are all doing very well. We have Megan Drinkall and her cairn Alfie who remain in 6th place overall with 38 points - quite an achievement for a youngster. (Megan, I mean). They are topping the Grade 1 agility dogs so very well done to them both. Just four points behind Megan and Alfie are Susan Seal and Mac, a Westie. These two have been creeping up the table, and are now lying in 7th place overall with 28 points. This pushed Louise Palmer and Milly, another Cairn down one place to 8th (27 points). I have not had any recent results from Louise, so if you have any please do send them to me.

Jennie Fairweather has no results to report as Tinker is still not running the course he should be doing! But, maybe one day... The other Cairns have shown Jennie that it is possible!

I have heard from Camilla Hamilton with Dougal who tells me they are not competing at the moment. I have not heard anything from Charlotte Rowles and Ann Marie Hill so if you have any results just email them to me at ockcairns@yahoo.com.

The Cairns in this league are also doing well in The Agility Club Awards 2009. Louise Palmer and Milly are 43rd in Small Grade 1. Nikki Barbar and Ollie are 20th in Small Grade 4, and Sorcha Price and Crisp are 27th in small grade 6. What a very good result for them all. Well done.

That is all for now. Please keep me updated as this league does keep running until 31st December.

July 2009

Membership in the STBL has almost doubled since the launch in May 2009.

New members Nikki Barbar and Ollie, a Small Grade 5 Cairn, are having a good year. At the moment, they are heading the top of this league having achieved 100 points so far. They are currently in 14th place in Small Grade 4 in The Agility Club Annual Awards 2009, a great achievement,. Congratulations to you both.

This is not all Ollie had done. He moved up from Grade 4 to Grade 5 by winning Small Agility Graded 4 – 5 at Shrewsbury Agility Club (KC Show) in May and managed to get the 6 points he needed to move him up to (UKA) Senior in Performance Level. He did this at HH Weekend (UKA Show) in May, winning first in Novice Snooker, so he did it in style. Moreover, at Scrambles (UKA Show) in April, he got a clear run in Beginners Steeplechase which moved him up to Novice Steeplechase. Well done.

In second place of the Scottish Terrier Breed league is Sorcha with Crisp who is also a Cairn in Small Grade 6. They are not too far behind Nikki and Ollie with 79 points. In third place is Laura Mandelson with Kai who is a Grade 4 Cairn X Westie.

May 2009

NettyThe Scottish Terrier Breeds (STB) Agility League is doing well although there are a lot more STB terriers out there who could join  - the more the merrier. At the moment there are a lot of Grade 1 competitors so it will be interesting to see who and when they move up the grades

It all started as a result of a conversation between Cairn handlers Jennie Fairweather and  Margaret Ehrenbergan at a 'beauty' dog show. They talked about about agility and came up with the idea of setting up a Cairn Terrier Breed Agility League. After talking with others, it was agreed that it would be more fun if the League was not limited to just Cairns but included all the other Scottish terrier breeds.

Jennie said, 'I know from experience that it is difficult enough to train an agility dog but Cairns, in particular, can be a bit stubborn if they do not want to work so if you get one that is willing, then make the most of it.'

Jennie put an advert on the Desperately Seeking...page of Agilitynet to see if there was any interest. She got a good response and so she started the Scottish Terrier Breeds Agility League (STB)  on 1 January 2009 to run from the beginning of the year until 31 December 2009. Mabel'If there is sufficient interest - and at the moment there is plenty - they will continue to run this League.'

Membership is free and open to any terrier breeds which originated from Scotland e.g. Cairn, Westie, Scottish, Skye, Dandie Dimonte - and they don't have to live in Scotland, just originated from Scotland. They can be any grade. Anyone who is interested in joining should email Jennie Fairweather at ockcairns@yahoo.com or tel.  01869 322996.

The League
At the moment, there is one Cairn who is a Grade 7 agility dog and, although she has only been to one show, she has managed to achieve 28 points so very well done to Mary and Misty. Misty gained a 1st in Agility and a 2nd place in the Open Agility class. She also achieved a 2nd place in the Jumping class.

There are seven dogs in Grade 1 and the leaders are as follows.

In first place is Louise Palmer with Milly, a Cairn who has 23 points won in five shows. This is a fantastic result for a Grade 1 dog especially as the classes were Combined, ranging from G1-3 to G1-5 grades. Milly achieved a 3rd, 4th and 8th place in the Agility classes and a clear run in all the rest.

In 2nd place with three points is Max, a Westie owned by Julie Bond. They haven't been to as many shows as Louise and Milly (3) but they have achieved clear runs every time. Again they have entered combined jumping classes so very well done to them both.

In 3rd place with two points is Tigger, a Cairn Terrier owned by Margaret Ehrenberg. Tigger has managed to gain a clear run in G1-4 Agility and G1-4 Jumping at the same show. Unfortunately for him, although he got a clear run in the G1-7 Combined Agility class, he managed to pick up time faults so this does not count for this competition. Tigger has achieved a lot as not only is he doing agility. He is also a Show Champion, Carradine Master Tigger and he is distantly related to Jennie Fairweather's cairn, Tinker.

The results have just come in from Sue Seal whose Westie Mac who got a clear run in the Nursery so gets one point and puts him in 4th place.

Jennie is still waiting for results from the other handlers and dogs.

She said, 'I have to confess that I have yet to enter my cairn Tinker into a show as he is still learning and isn't doing full weaves as yet but I am working on this - maybe a Jumping class at The Agility Club show? Who knows! That's it for now it is up to you all to keep me informed.'

The results up to 18 May 2009 are below.
