My experience: I raw fed my dogs for a good number of years, but running my own business and family commitments meant that I often didn't have enough time to locate the ingredients needed to make up a raw diet. The product has been a great way for me to get back to feeding this way.

What I liked:  As a professional groomer, I see lots of dogs with coats that are too dry or too greasy, skin that is too sensitive and ears that produce too much wax as well as dogs with continual anal gland and colitis problems. I'm sure that if the owners fed these dogs a simple raw diet, they would see huge improvements and might even negate the need for steroids, specialist shampoos and continual vet visits.

I also suspect that for some dogs, a raw diet can aid with behavioural issues. From my own experience, my one bitch, has some behavioural problems and I now regard this raw food diet as an essential element in the management of her behaviour. I can assess her with a degree of accuracy, knowing that any temperament issues have not been chemically induced by the additions of colourings, flavourings, preservatives and inappropriate protein levels and sources. Since starting the food, her coat has never looked better and she is generally a much happier dog.

It' such a simple concept and works so well. The dog is literally fed a sausage/sausages at meal time. You don't even need to use bowls if you don't want to. For raw food converts, it takes away the mess and all the thinking has been done for you. For those who would like to try raw feeding their dogs, but don't know where to start, this product is perfect.

If you are unsure where to start, Carol Hunkin, one of the Green Dog Deli owners, can give a base line requirement for your dog, based on size. Then you just monitor your dog and adjust accordingly. For example, my high drive 20kg bitch has three sausages and one chicken wing daily and she looks superb on it. This was the quantity Carol recommended and she was spot on!

All five of my dogs are fed on the sausages and their ages range from 16 months to 16 years old! No adolescent food for one, adult for another and geriatric for the oldie, this product is suitable for all of them.

Green Dog Deli Trade StandWhat could be improved: I can't see how the product can be improved. Even if someone doesn't like the idea of feeding chicken wings to provide calcium, sausages can be made up with the bones already ground into them.

Obviously you will need enough freezer space, if like me, you want to buy in bulk, but the Green Dog Deli ladies will provide exactly the amount you want, if space is a problem. I did wonder how feeding the sausages would work during the summer season when we stay in the caravan for quite a few shows. On Carol's suggestion, I had the sausages in the smaller recyclable boxes and they fitted perfectly into the fridge/freezer box and cool box and we managed without a problem.

At present, the sausages are only available in Oxford and the surrounding counties, which will be disappointing for those not in these areas who would like to try the products. However, the Green Dog Deli van does visit shows outside of county, so for interested parties there is at least the opportunity to chat with the ladies about their sausages and treats.

Production: Handmade in small batches at an established and highly regarded local butchers

Instructions: There is a brilliant website to support the product, packed with information and new customers get a comprehensive feeding guide.

Price: Pack of 6 (600g approx) = £2.50 Pack of 42 (4.2kg approx) = £15.20

Value for money: Very good value for money, especially considering that the meat used is all human grade, and the sausages are made by a local butcher and not mass produced! The food works out cheaper than a some of the complete foods on the market.

Overall rating: 10/10  There are so many more positive comments I could say about this small and passionately run business and even if you have no intention of feeding a raw diet, the website is well worth a visit..

About the reviewer...
Rose Burrows has owned dogs for 39 years and been involved with obedience, breed showing and agility over the years.

She currently has five dogs - two Bearded Collies, two Welsh sheepdogs and a Border Terrier. She used to compete with the Border Terrier but had to give her over to her husband to run, after an Achilles tendon injury. She hopes to be back competing with my new dog in the future.  She knew she was hooked on agility when she stopped having Continental holidays and bought a caravan instead, so that she could stay at the shows!

Rose runs her own dog grooming business.
