Best features: I was pleased to be asked to review this book as I have been aware for some time of the talents of this writer. Usually I avoid the general dog books. However beautifully produced, they normally attempt to cover so much ground that they can only at best be superficial and at worst misleading. This little book on the other hand gets down to the nitty-gritty of living with dogs and covers vital areas usually ignored.

While for reasons of space, it still cannot be totally comprehensive it introduces the reader to the subtleties of canine communication and the real meaning of the body language that so many humans misinterpret. It goes through the social development of our dogs, with many pointers on the way as to what to expect in the way of behaviour as our puppies grow into adults. It points out the importance of early socialisation and social referencing if the puppy is to grow up as a normal dog.

How to Handle Living With Your Dog

There is a an important section on stress and the ways in which we as owners can help both to develop the good type and to deal with the emotional fall out. It deals with the importance of mental stimulation, not just for the breeds who become unstable without a job to do but for all dogs if their mental health is to be supported.

The section on exercise answers many questions about how much exercise is suitable from the growing puppy to the adult dog and the final chapter on health and nutrition is useful.

Could be better: There are naturally points about which I have some reservations. The training section is very superficial and the author and I agree to differ over method. To be fair training require a book to itself if justice is to be done and it is not intended to be the focus of this one. I would also take issue over the statement that owners should not play tuggy with their dogs. My take on this is that it is okay to play tuggy if you teach your dog the rules and control the game. However, this is nit picking and there is a lot of valuable information contained in this book that you will not find in similar books of this size.

Value for money:  If you are new to owning a dog it will open your eyes to the complexities of living with another living organism. If you are an experienced owner it may well give you food for thought. Well worth a read.
