A relationship building book for you and your dog

By Susan Garrett
Reviewed by Christine Moodie

Description: Ruff Love is a complete programme of behaviour modification for your dog. It is based on control reinforcements and is described from Day 1 until however long it takes. There are also modifications for puppies and newly introduced dogs,

Do all dogs benefit from this programme? The author believes that any owner who feels that they could improve their relationship with their dog will benefit from the Ruff Love programme.

Contents include:-

  • Does My Dog Need 'Ruff Love?'

  • How Long Does the Program Last?

  • The Role of the Ruff Love Trainer

  • Essential Elements for All Stages of Ruff Love

  • Tracking Your Ruff Love Progress

  • Ruff Love for Puppies

  • Stage One of Ruff Love: All Privileges are Gone!

  • Stage Two of Ruff Love: Testing Your Progress

  • Stage Three of Ruff Love: The Light

  • Stage Four of Ruff Love: Management for a Lifetime

  • Ruff Love: Questions and Answers

  • Appendix One: The Recall

  • Appendix Two: Keeping a Journal

  • Appendix Three: Ruff Love for Aggressive Dogs and Puppies

  • Appendix Four: Ruff Love Quick Reference Charts

Best Features: There is a very good section on motivational games to play with your dogs. Also it made me analyse my relationship with my young dog Lester. Most of the questions I wanted to ask were answered.

I am sure if you have the dedication needed to carry out the programme that  you would literally have your dog  ‘eating out of your hand’! Susan requires complete adherence to the programme but I have just used certain aspects and have noticed a distinct improvement in the behaviour of Lester.

The section on new dogs and puppies, I felt was particularly valuable.

Worst Features: The author requires that you follow the programme completely and without reservation and I didn’t feel I could. I would find it very difficult to isolate the dog I wanted to carry out the programme with and I don’t feel that this aspect of how the other dogs in the pack were to be treated was addressed.

Also dogs do have different characters, and I would like to see this addressed.

Design, format and quality of production: The layout is good.

Overall Rating: 8/10 - a very useful and thought provoking book.

Price: £12.00 (from Tony Dickinson in UK) Also available from Clean Run (USA) via the Internet.

Value for Money:  Well worth having. I am really glad I bought the book as it really made me THINK. When I get another dog I shall certainly be rereading Ruff Love, and my initial management of our relationship will be different.

About The Reviewer
Christine Moodie lives in beautiful part of North Shropshire and have been around the agility scene for ten years now.

Her main claim to fame are successes  with her Mini dog Ted (Teddy a Go Go), a sable Sheltie. He has always been the perfect dog, easy to train, enthusiastic and they have always worked as a good team. Someone else might have had even greater successes with him but they've had a great time.

Enter Lester. While one cannot necessarily repeat the formula but Christine is thinks she is getting there – s l o w l y – but still a bit more of a challenge than fun at shows.

She also has a JRT X Bertie, a real character, who has suddenly decided to speed up at the advanced age of six but let's face it, he is only ten inches at the shoulder and his legs are a bit short. Running him is fun!
