A survival guide

By Sally Rowe
Reviewed by Steve Croxford

Description: Although it is designed for new competitors, this booklet would be useful as a reference guide for seasoned competitors. It includes definitions of all the different levels, classes and shows in agility, details about the equipment, how to enter a show what to do before, during and after your run.

Chapters include:-

  • Class definitions
  • Class types
  • Special classes
  • The obstacles
  • Faulting
  • How to enter a show
  • Getting the schedule
  • What's in a schedule + filling it in
  • What to do at the show - including The night before, what to take, on arrival, walking the course, explaining your running order, your run and after your run

Best Features: Many years ago when I started out, it would have been useful to have such a reference book to help me to understand the do's and don'ts of entering and competing at shows. I mostly found things out over a long period of time by getting things wrong at first and by learning from other more experienced agility people.

Sally's book clearly sets out in simple to understand terms everything you need to know about show survival and should make entering your first - and subsequent shows - a doddle.

For instance, it includes information about waiting for the timekeeper before starting and taking ALL collars off the dog -the type of thing that completely stumps new competitors, as well as explaining the intricate rules about the class levels and specific faulting.

The book is not only aimed at the handler new to agility either. I am sure many will find out things from the book they didn't know. Some of the gems in the book took me years to discover so it is well worth a read.

What could be improved:  Nothing I can think of.

Design & Format: The booklet is paperback, litho printed and saddle stitched, 32 pages (6,000 words approx.) There is a colour photo of Sally dog Lady on front, black and white insides with humourous cartoon illustrations by Sally's 16 year old brother, David.

Overall Rating: Sally has produced an excellent comprehensive guide to anyone interested in agility.

Price: £6 each +50p (P&P). Special discount price for orders of five or more at £5.00 each + P&P
Note: Clubs buying in bulk can chose to pass the discount on to their members or sell the booklet for the full price and keep the difference!

Value for Money: Excellent. In addition to general advice The Survival Pack includes Kennel Club rules and regulations plus a bag of training treats, a ring clip and some poo bags - all for the cost of entering three classes at a show.
